Antonio Silva Dominates Fedor Emelianenko

The MMA champion once viewed as invincible has now lost two in a row.

For the second consecutive time, Fedor Emelianenko has suffered a stunning upset loss, this time falling to Antonio Silva in the opening round of the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament.

Silva absolutely destroyed Fedor in the second round of the fight, staying on top of him for all five minutes and battering his face so badly that after the second round, Fedor's right eye was swollen shut and he simply couldn't continue. The doctor made the right decision to stop the fight, and the official ruling was that Silva won the fight by TKO after the second round.

For Silva, the former EliteXC heavyweight champion, it was by far the most significant victory of his MMA career. He'll next face the winner of the upcoming Fabricio Werdum-Alistair Overeem fight. For Fedor, the loss demonstrates that he's simply not an elite heavyweight anymore.

WEC Vet Ian McCall Upsets Top Flyweight Jussier da Silva

by Michael David SmithThe flyweight division in mixed martial arts is easily overlooked, with none of the major American promotions putting 125-pounders in the cage. But the flyweights usually put on a show when they get the opportunity, and that was certainly the case on Friday night, when World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Ian McCall upset Jussier da Silva, the Brazilian who was generally recognized as the best flyweight in MMA heading into the fight.

McCall, who was cut by the WEC after losing to bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in 2009, put on an impressive performance to beat da Silva by unanimous decision on Friday night's Tachi Palace Fights card. McCall would now have to be considered one of the elite flyweights in the sport, and maybe the best flyweight in the world.

Nice move UFC: Toronto's UFC 129 sells 42,000 tix in four minutes

Holding an MMA fight card in a 60,000 seat stadium may have seemed risky to some. The UFC took a big risk by booking it's first Ontario show at the massive Rogers Center. After all, the fight promotion is used to selling tickets in 12,000-22,000 seat venues.

Even UFC president Dana White was worried about protecting the integrity of the product even in a scaled down setting of 42,000. He wanted to make sure fans in the upper levels could still see the fight. He was worried, but apparently the fans weren't.

According to the UFC's Tom Wright all 42,000 of the tickets for UFC 129 were gone in four minutes. The promotion will release more for purchase today and tomorrow, which may push the crowd towards the 50,000 mark.

The secondary ticket market is already exploding in terms of price. According to the Canadian Press, one major ticket re-seller has posted some crazy prices:
On Friday, ticket reseller Stubhub offered seats from $104.99 (500 level, Row 20, corner upper tier) to $39,999 (ringside cage, Row 1).
Tickets originally ranged in price from $50 to $800.

This kind of response in Canada should pretty much put to rest where the possible Georges St. Pierre-Anderson Silva fight should be held. It's either Rogers Centre again or Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Zach Arnold from Fight Opinion agrees:

UFC must be hoping and praying for Georges St. Pierre to beat Jake Shields. If the fight is ugly but GSP wins, that's one thing. If Shields wins and it's exciting, that's a crapshoot. If Shields wins and it's ugly, then I don't know how hot Toronto would stay as a live-event market. Ultimately, the goal is for St. Pierre to win and look strong so that the ‘dream match-up' between him and Anderson Silva happens in Toronto.

Scott Coker on Dana White Twitter Rant: 'Keep Watching Strikeforce'

After Fedor Emelianenko lost on Saturday night's Strikeforce card, UFC President Dana White went wild on Twitter, where he ripped Fedor's management at M-1 Global for, in White's view, tarnishing Fedor's legacy by keeping him away from fighting in the sport's premier promotion.

White's tweets included comments like, "Fedor has been fighting bums for years!" and "Last nights fight was a set up for Fedor to win and he got his face smashed!" Many of the tweets included profane insults about Fedor's managers and fans, some of whom were using Twitter to argue with White about Fedor's legacy.

But while White was animated and many of his Twitter correspondents were, too, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said he didn't get worked up about any of it.

You tell us: where does Silva's KO kick rank?

Even Vitor Belfort was impressed with the kick Anderson Silva threw to knock Belfort out at UFC 126. Belfort tweeted, "I just saw the kick. It was fantastic even then I think this will land once in a million."

A front kick by itself is not that impressive. It's usually thrown to the body to create space, but can be dangerous because your opponent could catch it, and use it for a takedown. This kick was unique because of where Silva landed it and the speed he used in throwing it. Silva placed the kick perfectly on Belfort's chin, snapping his head back. He also threw it so fast that Belfort had no chance at catching Silva's leg.

But where does it rank among other head kick knockouts?

Do you put it above Anthony Pettis' Matrix-like, off-the-cage kick of Ben Henderson at the final WEC event? Or the head kick that Rashad Evans used to knock out Sean Salmon and signal that Evans was more than "just a wrestler?" Maybe it's Gabriel Gonzaga using the Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic's signature head kick against him, knocking the Pride legend to the canvas? Or Dan Hornbuckle stiffening Akihiro Gono at Sengoku's Ninth Battle?

Considering the circumstances of the bout, Silva is above them all. He was defending his belt in the main event of a sold-out, Super Bowl weekend UFC card. He knocked out someone who was last knocked out in 2004, and that was via a doctor's stoppage.

If you planned on skating the new Suffolk park at Bennett's Creek this weekend, you might want to change your plans. According to the sign the park isn't opening until April 2nd. The flat concrete at Lake Meade was being worked on today, and according to the contractor, the concrete will be stable enough to skate on in three to four days but they are probably going to be doing landscaping so I'd expect an April 2nd opening date for that park as well.

Lyle Beerbohm is no longer undefeated, as Pat Healy gave him the first loss of his career in an entertaining fight on Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers card.

After 15 minutes of back-and-forth action, all three judges scored it 29-28 for Healy, as did I. The victory improved Healy's record to 26-17, while Beerbohm fell to 15-1.

"Good fight," Healy said afterward. "If they want a rematch, any time. I think I out-worked him, out-hustled him, won the exchanges on the feet and had some real close submissions."

The mobs show up in North America to meet GSP and Fedor

Fight nights are usually the big nights in mixed martial arts, but yesterday on a random Tuesday, the sport took center stage in Toronto and New York. The UFC hit the ground in Canada for a big press conference to introduce the fighters for its April event in Ontario. Strikeforce held a huge fanfest in New York. Fedor Emelianenko was swarmed like a rockstar.

Check out the photos at Roseland in New York City as Fedor, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Sergei Kharitonov, Andrei Arlovski, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Brett Rogers and Frank Shamrock hung out with the crowd.

Fans were fired up:

Dyami Arroyo of The Bronx was the first to show at 8:30 a.m. Despite cold, bitter, windy conditions, he kept his spot at the head of the line. "There was no way I was going to miss a chance to meet Fedor and the greatest heavyweights in the world," Arroyo told Strikeforce P.R.. "As soon as I heard about this, I told my boss I was taking the day off."
Said Brooklyn’s Joe Doyle, who arrived a little after Arroyo and Diaz: "To get this kind of access to these kinds of fighters is unbelievable," he said. "There was no way I wasn’t going to be here. I am really happy that STRIKEFORCE did something like this for us. No other MMA organizations do anything like this around here."

Strikeforce opens its heavyweight Grand Prix this Saturday in New Jersey (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT). Fedor faces Antonio Silva while Arlovski battles Kharitonov.

Miguel Torres: Fedor Should 'Man Up or Get Left Behind'

It's not often Fedor Emelianenko and Miguel Torres are talked about in the same conversation.

Fedor is a soft-spoken 230-pound heavyweight from the heart of Russia. Torres is a 135-pound Mexican-American bantamweight living in the shadow of Chicago, and a few glances at his Twitter feed shows he's far from shy. Physical and social equals, they are not.

Fedor has been synonymous with the sport of mixed martial arts for years - so much so that he needs only one name. But only in the last three years did Torres get widespread recognition.

There was a time two years ago when Fedor was at the top of most pound-for-pound discussions, and Torres himself had entered the top-5 mix. But beyond that, the two had little reason to be mentioned together.

But they might be more alike than most people think. Torres believes the similarities are there - and he believes Fedor, following back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, needs to do just what he did last year after suffering a similar, formerly unthinkable skid: Pack the bags and change things up, or he'll only have himself to blame.

Better Decade: Fedor Before Werdum, or Silva Through Belfort?

Twelve days ago, I would have said that Fedor Emelianenko was the best fighter in the history of mixed martial arts. Now, I'm not so sure. The combination of Anderson Silva's spectacular knockout of Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 and Fedor's loss to Antonio Silva a week later might force me to reconsider and pick Silva as the greatest in MMA history, and Fedor as No. 2.

It's a close call, and any argument about the best fighter in MMA history is rife with problems. The biggest problem being that there's not much history to MMA. It's a new sport, and it's a really new sport if you want to use an apples-to-apples comparison of fighters competing under modern rules with weight classes. In fact, I think the arguments about the best fighters in MMA history are so complex that I don't want to deal with them here.

Instead, I'd like to ask a simpler question: Who had a better decade: Silva in the 10 years up to and including his victory over Belfort, or Fedor in the 10 years before the loss to Fabricio Werdum that started his current two-fight slide?

Ryan Couture Submits Lee Higgins, Improves to 2-0 in Strikeforce

Ryan Couture, the son of UFC legend Randy Couture, improved to 2-0 in his brief professional MMA career with a solid victory over Lee Higgins at Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers card.

The third-round submission via rear-naked choke was a more impressive all-around performance than Couture's professional debut. Couture showed solid grappling and effective if not particularly powerful striking, and he finally put Higgins away with just 19 seconds remaining in the third round.

"He's tough as nails," Couture said of Higgins. "I'm real glad I was finally able to get him there at the end."

Bellator wants you to spend Saturday nights with them

Bellator Fighting Championships kicks off its fourth season on the first weekend of March, and again, they'll be on a new network and on a new night. MTV2 will air Bellator's fights live on Saturday nights starting Mar. 5.

The good news is that the tournament-based promotion will be live, something they didn't have with Fox Sports, their previous home. The bad news is that Saturday nights are owned by the UFC and Strikeforce. Will Bellator face a conflict?

"That's part of the magic we have here," [Bellator CEO Bjorn] Rebney said. "When I was sitting down with the MTV folks, they said, 'Look, if there's a big UFC event, if there's a pay-per-view event, we'll kick our show an hour or two earlier so that it can be an MMA night for fans.' They can go from MTV2 to Spike TV or go from MTV2 to pay-per-view.

Bellator's hope is that MMA fans can make a night of it. For MTV and Spike's parent company, Viacom, this is a dream come true. Fans can stay with their company for hours of MMA watching. On Mar. 19, for example, a fight can watch Bellator's event in Oklahoma before tuning into UFC 128.

But Bellator will run into Strikeforce trouble on their very first week. The same night that Bellator kicks off their welterweight tourney in California, Strikeforce will put two belts on the line in Ohio, and in their regular timeslot, the two would conflct for an hour.

Watching MMA helps man disarm an alleged murderer on the subway

On Saturday morning, Joseph Lozito was simply taking the subway to work. Today, he finds himself labeled a hero after taking down a whack job, who seemed intent on adding to a 28-hour stabbing and murder spree.

Lovito said he used an MMA technique to take down a knife-wielding attacker on the No. 3 train. From ABC News:

With a leg swipe, Lozito helped knock down [Maksim] Gelman, a grafitti vandal with at least 10 prior arrests. Lozito said that watching mixed martial arts on television helped him fight Gelman.
"I guess you watch it for 20 years, you just pick up some things through osmosis," he said.

He knew something was wrong when he first jumped on the No. 3:

"When I boarded the train at Penn Station, a good amount of people boarded and I noticed there were two police officers boarding with me. You could hear on their walkie talkies that something was going on...they were there for a reason," Lozito said.
Subway riders had spotted Gelman jumping off one train and onto another early Saturday morning.
When he boarded Lozito's subway car, he pounded on the conductor's door, demanding to be let in.
"When I first saw this man approach the motorman's quarters, he just looked off, he just looked like there was something about him. When he started knocking on the window, telling the police to let him in, it set up a red flag," he said.

Lozito said Gelman, 23, then turned his attention to him.

"Basically, he was about two or three feet away from me. He took out a giant knife and just looked at me and said, 'You're going to die, you're going to die,' and then he lunged at me," Lozito said.

Lozito lunged forward and took Gelman to the floor. From the New York Times:

Once on the ground, Mr. Lozito grabbed his attacker around the waist, and the officers from the motorman’s cab rushed to help. They handcuffed and arrested Mr. Gelman, who was awaiting arraignment Sunday night.
Mr. Lozito suffered four knife wounds to the head and a gash above his left eye. The tribal tattoo on his left triceps was slashed, and a wound on the back of his head required 20 stitches and 18 staples.
"It could have been a lot worse," he said. "I’m glad I wasn’t No. 5 — I’m glad he didn’t kill anyone else."

New York City police were on the lookout for Gelman:

...who killed his mother’s boyfriend, Alexander Kuznetsov; an unrequited love interest, Yelena Bulchenko; and Ms. Bulchenko's mother, Anna Bulchenko.

Gelman also ran over and killed a 62-year-old pedestrian with a car he stole from Kuznetsov. He crashed that Lexus into a Pontiac Bonneville, stabbed that driver and stole the Bonneville. Four hours later, Gelman emerged in Crown Heights and stabbed a livery cab driver.

Can Andrei Arlovski stop his losing streak in the Strikeforce GP?

Andrei Arlovski's place in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix will give him a shot to correct his downward spiral that started with a knockout by GP favorite Fedor Emelianenko, then was continued by Brett Rogers and Antonio Silva, who are also both in the GP.

To get back in the W column, Arlovski has to beat Sergei Kharitonov on Saturday. Kharitonov is fresh off a quick win at Dynamite!!! in Japan and is not discounting Arlovski.

"I don't think I'm getting Arlovski at a good time because of his losses. (His opponents) were some of the best fighters in the world. It's probably worse for me because he is hungry to win," Kharitonov said at the pre-fight press conference.

With his last win coming in 2008, Arlovski definitely is desperate to win.

"These three last guys who kicked my (butt) have motivated me. I'm determined. This tournament is a great opportunity," Arlovski said, sitting on the same stage as Emelianenko, Rogers and Silva.

Scott Coker Expects to Book Fedor vs. Overeem-Werdum Loser

Two days after Fedor Emelianenko suffered his second consecutive loss and said in his post-fight interview that it might be time to walk away, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said he expects Fedor to return rather than retire.

And Coker already has an opponent for Fedor in mind: The loser of the April 9 bout between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum.

"If the fighter doesn't want to fight you're not gonna want him to fight," Coker told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. "If the fighter doesn't want to fight the promoter doesn't make him fight. And if he wants to retire then it's time to walk away. But I don't think that's the case ... and I think the loser of Overeem and Werdum, that would be a great fight for Fedor."

Bobby Lashley Returns to MMA, Will Fight James Jack on March 25

Former pro wrestling star Bobby Lashley lost the last time he stepped into the mixed martial arts cage, but he's not done fighting.

Titan Fighting Championship has announced the signing of Lashley, who will fight James Jack on March 25 in a show televised on HDNet. The card will also feature former UFC star Phil Baroni taking on a little-known fighter named Nick Nolte.

For Titan, signing Lashley is a strong indication that the promotion is willing to spend money to acquire recognizable names. The promotion also spent big to acquire Tim Sylvia, who was knocked out in 32 seconds by Abe Wagner last month. The question is whether Titan can build enough of a following among MMA fans to justify the expenses of fighters like Sylvia and Lashley.

'The other Overeem' grounds and quickly submits Sefo

Little bro is getting all the attention, but don't sleep on Valentijn Overeem. The MMA veteran is dangerous and especially a guy like Ray Sefo, who has so liittle MMA experience. Overeem stood with the kickboxer Sefo for a while then got it to the ground easily and submitted Sefo in a matter of seconds via neck crank at 1:37 of the first at the Izod Center in New Jersey.

Overeem's younger brother, Alistair is one of the favorites in the main field of the tournament. He's also the Strikeforce heavyweight champ.

Sefo, 39, is a very good kickboxer, but trying to play catch up with his knowledge of the ground game. Sefo (2-1 MMA, 56-21-1 kickboxing) was more than holding his own on the feet. The more athletic and younger Overeem (29-25) was getting hit with some jabs and overhand rights.

With 3:10 gone by in the fight, Overeem, 34, dropped for a sloppy double-leg takedown. Sefo sprawled, but Overeem was still able to crawl his way into a takedown. Sefo found himself underneath Overeem, who was in side control. The Dutch kickboxer got his right arm under Sefo's head and pulled up. The New Zealander quickly tapped. When he rose to his feet, he was grabbing his left shoulder.
