Surfploytation by Damian Fulton

Brand new work by Damian Fulton on show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in LA, California from July 2 - August 1, 2010Damian Fulton is fascinated by the dichotomy and duality of Los Angeles seaside culture. The proximity of one of the world's most diverse and congested cities to the Pacific coast provides fertile material for Damian's dark take on the California dream. Perhaps it's in the water.Surfploytation continues Damian's twisted ride down PCH where Surf City is way more Gotham than groovy. Car chases, girls with guns, noir nostalgia, a visual narrative that reads like conceptual art for a fictional Surfploytation movie. For this show, experimentation with new materials native to his environment, balsa wood and fiberglass, skate decks, and surfboard fins, have this new work amped up to 11.Before focusing on his own vision, Damian helped, Disneyland, Marvel Productions, and various magazines find theirs.La Luz de Jesus Gallery (map)July 2 - August 1, 2010Artist Reception: Friday. With problems at home, Tito has a lot on his prefight plate

Fighting through injuries at age 35 with declining skills, is a massive hurdle Tito Ortiz must clear in order to get his career back on track this weekend at UFC 121. Imagine doing that while dealing with drama on the homefront. Back in April, Ortiz had a dust up with his wife Jenna Jameson. After a week of embarrassment that played out very publicly, the couple reported that everything was okay and they had reconciled. Apparently something was still simmering, then there was death in the family and instantly Ortiz had more drama deal with in the final weeks of his training camp.Ortiz was asked by USA Today to clarify his remarks. "Me and Jenna had a loss in our family. Larry Massoli, her father, passed away two-and-a-half weeks ago. I'm a very emotional guy, man. I'm up here in Big Bear alone. There were a lot of things said, and I think I let my emotions hang out a little too much, and I probably shouldn't do that, but we were just going through a lot," said Ortiz. "Me and Jenna were going through a lot. I think the hard times of losing her father just got the best of me. It was just really, really hard.""I say some things out of hostility and hard emotions. I think it was a little more than that. He was someone that we loved very much. Some things were said between us and I didn't believe it, and I had to be shown the proof."But it was a lot more than just talking things out. Ortiz also had to leave training camp several times and travel the 100-plus miles back to Southern California."The last three weekends, we've been putting together -- actually, Jenna's put together the funeral for her father. Her father passed away one weekend. I went to see her. I went down -- she said, "No, no, stay up there" -- I came down the mountain, which I'm not really normally known to leave the mountain. I went down there for a day, and it was hard. Really, really hard to see the pain she was in," said Ortiz."Came back up here. The next week was the funeral. I went back down there again to help. That was when we had our little confrontation, and it was nothing more than a little miscommunication on my part." That's a lot to deal with but Ortiz says everything is okay now with Jameson."Things are back to normal now. We had to come to terms, and we came to terms. Things are great now," said Ortiz. "I'm excited to see her, because I hadn't really seen her in the last week. I'm only able to see her one day a week. It's hard on me. It's hard on my emotions. I love the woman so much, and I love my kids so much, and to be away from them for this long a time is really hard on both of us. [...] Things are 100%, man. Things are good. Things like this, challenges, every relationship, it just makes it stronger."This doesn't look good for Ortiz. He's battling, a younger clone of himself. All the pressure is on the former champ and he hasn't had much peace leading up to the fight. It'll be shocking if Ortiz can compartmentalize all of this, pull it together and use the Octagon as his santuary.

UFC return comes early for WEC's Garcia, TUF 12 Finale adds the brawler

We won't have to wait very long before the first official sign of the WEC-UFC merger. Jose Aldo was supposed to kick things off for WEC fighters at UFC 125 on Jan. 1. Now MMAWeekly reports that the first look at WEC fighters in the UFC will arrive in less than six weeks. ... Leonard Garcia and Tyler Toner have agreed to meet at the "Ultimate Fighter" season 12 finale show on Dec 4.There shouldn't be any UFC butterflies for Garcia, who fought three times for the promotion at lightweight before he dropped down to 145 pounds and the WEC in 2008. Garcia (pictured on the left) challenged for the WEC featherweight title at WEC 39, losing to Mike Brown. He's gone 2-2-1 since, so there's some pressure on him to win against Toner. Another loss and Garcia (14-6-1, 3-3-1 WEC, 1-2 UFC) could be sent packing. Toner (10-2) was 1-1 with the WEC. Here's the rumored card at the TUF 12 Finale:Stephan Bonnar v. Igor PokrajacFinalist No. 1 v. Finalist No. 2Kendall Grove v. Demian MaiaRick Story v Johny HendricksRich Attonito v. Dave Branch Leonard Garcia v. Tyler Toner

Looking for a promotion, Johnson and Bowling produce mixed results

Strikeforce develops its future stars on its Challengers shows. Three months back, Sarah Kaufman came up big with a win over Roxanne Modafferi to move up Strikeforce's shows on Showtime. Las night, it was time for Roger Bowling and Lavar Johnson to land that signature win that'd get them the call up. Johnson came through with a KO finish of Virgil Zwicker while Roger Bowling showed he needs a little more seasoning during a loss to Bobby Voelker.Early in the fight, the 6-foot-4, 251-pound Johnson had to deal with the speed of  Zwicker. He took some good licks - leg kicks and some straight rights - before unloading on the smaller heavyweight. Ninety seconds into the first, with little regard for Zwicker's power, the big man began to swing for the fences. After some huge uppercuts, Zwicker crumbled to the mat. Johnson didn't have to throw another shot in getting his third Challenger Series win at 2:17 of the first. "I hit him hard a few times but he was in it for the fight. He made it a good fight," said Johnson.Johnson (15-3) said he's ready for the step up to Showtime's main cards."I'm ready for the big show. I want to chase down some of those big name guys and see if I have what it takes or not. I'm not afraid of an ass whuppin',"  said Johnson.Johnson, 33, mentioned names like Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers.  Bowling (8-1) looked awesome early in his fight. His speed overwhelmed Voelker but he got a little left hook happy. Voelker lost the first but started to time that Bowling leaping left hook. Voelker had Bowling missing badly in the opening minutes of the second and fired back with some hard shots. That's when Bowling went for a takedown. It got stuffed and instead of scrambling back to his feet, Bowling sat there on all fours allowing Voelker to tee off. He landed six huge shots and it was downhill from there for Bowling. Bowling got back to his feet but then tried another sloppy takedown that was thwarted. Voelker got top control and never relinquished it. He stayed busy with punches and hammerfists. Bruised and bloodied on his face, Bowling eventually covered up and turned to his side. The referee had to save him giving Voelker (23-8) the win at 3:58 of the second.   Strikeforce Challengers results (Courtesy MMAjunkie):Bobby Voelker def. WEC to merge with UFC; fighters surprised and happy

As was first reported by MMA Fighting, the UFC and the WEC will merge in January 2011. The WEC will have its two scheduled events, Urijah Faber vs. Takeya Mizugaki in Las Vegas on Nov. 11 and Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis in Arizona on Dec. 16. After that, the fighters will be rolled into the UFC. Henderson, the WEC lightweight champion, texted with Cagewriter after the news broke. He gave a simple reaction: :-). He couldn't be happier about the news that not only will the UFC and WEC merge, but that the winner of his bout with Pettis will fight the winner of Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight belt.  "I'm very excited. Now the major goal is to go over there wearing a belt," Henderson said. "To be the best and make that claim, you've gotta beat the best. I want to take that one step further and beat not only the best, but everyone so there's no doubt." His opponent on Dec. 16, Anthony Pettis, is just as excited about the merger."When I heard about it, I was finishing up my morning training session, and I wanted to go right back to the gym and train," Pettis told Cagewriter. "My fight with Ben was big enough, and now I'm two fights away from being the UFC champion. It's two championships in two fights."He said he will always be grateful for his beginnings with the WEC."I look at it like college, and now I'm going to the NBA, and it just so happens that I'm the first-round draft pick. The UFC is where I want to be." Henderson and Pettis both said they had no idea that the merger was coming, which was echoed by other fighters. Cagewriter broke the news to bantamweight Scott Jorgensen, who will fight Dominick Cruz for the title in December, and lightweight Anthony Njokuani, who will battle Edward Faaloloto in November. "I think I'm going to be a UFC champion come January 1! I didn't even know what happened, I was asleep. I had a missed call from my manager and a text from you," Jorgensen told Cagewriter. He also said that he is looking forward to being exposed to a whole new audience, who will love his style of fighting. "I don't put on dull fights," Jorgensen said. "The fact that we're on the UFC stage means that I get to show more people how exciting and how tough I really am. Every UFC fan that wasn't a WEC fan will become my fan now."Njokuani didn't have any specific UFC fighter that he wanted to call out. He was just happy about the news.  "Oh, hell yeah. I'm ecstatic," he told Cagewriter. "There's nobody. Whoever I go up against, I'm just using that person to show the world what I've got."

Shane Carwin out of UFC 125 bout with injury

UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin announced via his own website today that he has pulled out of his UFC 125 bout with Roy Nelson. I am going to pull out of the fight with Roy Nelson. As many of you know I have been having some back pain. I had an MRI yesterday and I have some damage that may really require surgery. If the doctors do not have to perform surgery then I will be out 8-12 weeks. If they do have to perform surgery I do not know how long I will be out of action.Carwin said that he will be able continue training cardio while healing from surgery, which was clearly his Achilles heel in his UFC 116 loss to Brock Lesnar. If Cain Velasquez's win over Lesnar this past weekend said anything about the UFC's heavyweight division, it was that all fighters need a more complete game to be the champ, and that includes cardio. If Carwin wants to return to the title fight, it's smart for him to both get healthy and not ignore his endurance.Losing this fight is a blow to UFC 125, a New Year's Day card in Las Vegas. The event is headlined by the lightweight championship bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. Carwin is disappointed about having to pull off the card, tweeting, "Roy and my boss are the only ones happy about this."

UFC 121: Matt Hamill Hammers Tito Ortiz

by Michael David SmithMatt Hamill entered the UFC fighting on Tito Ortiz's team on The Ultimate Fighter. On Saturday night at UFC 121, Hamill may have ended Ortiz's UFC career.

Hamill beat Ortiz up for 15 minutes, battering Ortiz's face with punches in the stand-up and elbows on the ground, and easily won a unanimous decision. Considering that Ortiz hasn't won since beating Ken Shamrock on October 10, 2006, it may be time for the UFC to tell Ortiz he's no longer good enough to compete in the Octagon.

"There are two words I want to tell you," an emotional Hamill said to Ortiz after beating his former teacher. "Thank you." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hughes says Tito might be finished

Matt Hughes knows how Tito Ortiz feels. At 37 years old, the former welterweight champ has made enough money to walk away from the sport just like Tito. And the body certainly can't feel like it did when they were 25. The difference is Hughes, free of major surgeries, is still competitive while Ortiz, 35, is having trouble getting a win. Hughes commented on Tito's latest loss at UFC 121: "I consider myself an old guy and when some of the older fighters fight, I find
myself interested. Tito was on the card, against (Matt) Hamill and I didn’t think there
was any way for Tito to win," said Hughes on Matt-Hughes.com.Keep in mind, Hughes and Ortiz have never really been chummy. "Tito’s got that clothing line out, Team Punishment, and when I see people
wearing the shirts, I always tease them that it should be "Team Punished;" but I
would even go out on a limb and say that’s the last time we see Tito in the
UFC," said Hughes. The UFC cut veteran Patrick Cote today. Is Tito next? There's a few factors to consider. He could fight for another promotion and help raise their profile. But at $250,000 a fight is it worth it to keep Ortiz around so he can't fight elsewhere? He's still one of the bigger names to casual fans and does a nice job promotionally. With what looks a new network television deal on the way for the UFC and new audiences on the horizon in India and China, the promotion certainly has the resources to reward Ortiz for being one of the guys who carried the whole deal in the early 2000's.On a side note, Hughes deserves the same sort of treatment. He'd be great spokesperson before events. He made a good point in his UFC 121 commentary about the UFC broadcast team needing some balance. Hughes called out analyst Joe Rogan for going overboard on how dominant Jake Shields' grappling was versus Martin Kampmann. What if Hughes was the third man in the booth from time-to-time and actually took over the postfight role of Rogan in the cage? HBO thrives with a three-man, it might be time for the UFC to consider doing the same.

UFC 121 on tap: Iole makes his picks

The prefight hype job is done. The fellas weighed-in earlier today. The time is almost here to see the next in Brock Lesnar's evolution as an MMA fighter. At the weigh-in, he looked leaner. Imagine a faster Lesnar, who may be more comfortable on his feet. That's a scary proposition. When he first hit the big stage with the UFC, Cain Velasquez was touted as the future of the division. His chance to take out the massive UFC heavyweight champ has arrived. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole was one of the first media members to jump on the Cain train. Is he still as confident in Velasquez as he gets ready to step in with the monster? Iole gives his analysis of the main event, the lead-in fights and lists a couple of upset possibilities from the undercard in Anaheim. Yahoo's coverage of UFC 121 officially begins at 8 p.m. ET with special preview show that includes host Dave Farra speaking with Yahoo! writers Iole, Dave Meltzer and Dave Doyle plus fighters Vitor Belfort and Urijah Faber. Slow Down Expectations for Jose Aldo, Jon Jones

by Michael David SmithThe two hottest young fighters in MMA are the 24-year-old WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and the 23-year-old UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones. UFC President Dana White knows that, but he also wants fans to know that Aldo won't be rushed into fighting as a UFC lightweight until he wants to, and Jones won't be rushed into a light heavyweight title fight before he's ready.

And so if you're hoping to see Aldo in the Octagon or Jones fighting for a belt, don't hold your breath.

White said on The Fight Fix on CSN Washington that Aldo had a chance to move into the UFC lightweight division and fight Kenny Florian, but Aldo chose instead to keep defending his featherweight belt. And he said Jones won't fight for the light heavyweight title for at least a year. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Which cage wins? Octagon specifics for the UFC-WEC merger

Much is being made on mixed martial arts blogs and forums about the move to a 30-foot cage from the 25-footer for fighters in the World Extreme Cagefighting who are moving to the Ultimate Fighting Championship as part of the merger that UFC president Dana White announced Thursday. But, as it turns out, they aren't going to abandon the so-called "small cage" entirely. And nor are established UFC veterans. That's because the UFC has been using the 25-foot cage for all of its Ultimate Fight Night and Ultimate Fighter events, White confirmed on Friday. Venues that have hosted numerous UFC Fight Night cards, such as the Palms and the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, were smaller than a typical arena and so the UFC used the 25-foot cage as a way of making it fit easier into the available space. The numbered UFC events will continue to use the larger cage, but the UFN and TUF cards will use the 25-footer. That should make the ex-WEC fighters feel a little more at home.

Gerald Harris Living His UFC Dream, Not Forgetting the Path to Get There

Filed under: UFCEvery fighter has a story behind his story, how he got to where he is. Gerald Harris' back story is about good enough to warrant a nickname change from "Hurricane" to "Mr. Persistent."

Harris had 10 pro fights under his belt when he won a spot on Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter in 2008. He won his first fight in the house, but lost his next to eventual champ Amir Sadollah.

Normally, the majority of fighters on TUF seasons get one more crack on the season finale card. But for TUF 7, just five fighters from the show fought on the finale - and Harris wasn't one of them.

He returned to the relative obscurity of regional shows - but with only one goal in mind: win, win, win and get back to the UFC.

UFC 121 rebirth for Sanchez; Diego's pace does in Thiago

Diego Sanchez went back home for his fight against Paulo Thiago. The last few years, the Season 1 "Ultimate Fighter" middleweight champ lost his way and focus as he ennoyed his taste of stardom. Along that path, he also had a very public split with his trainer Greg Jackson. After suffering two straight losses, Sanchez decided it was time to bury the hatchet. He returned to his hometown Albuquerque, the site of Jackson's gym and tonight he looked like his old self. By the middle of the second, his relentless pace badly tired Thiago. Sanchez gets back on the horse with a unanimous decision victory, 30-26, 29-28 and 29-28, at UFC 121 in Anaheim. "You know I was really humbled in the last two losses," Sanchez told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "My motto for this camp was just earn it. I want to thank my team."Update: Sanchez and Thiago got an extra $70,000 for their effort by nabbing the fight of the night bonus. The first round actually went to Thiago on two-of-three scorecards. Sanchez looked too small for the Brazilian, who threw him away each time Diego looked for the takedown. Thiago also got the better of the standup. The key for Sanchez was pushing the action all five minutes. Things turned early in the second. Sanchez was able to close space and Thiago didn't make him pay. Sanchez (22-4, 11-4 UFC) scored a takedown 35 seconds into the round and maintained top control for the next three minutes. When it rose to the feet, Sanchez threw Thiago on his shoulder, walked across the Octagon and screamed as he slammed him to the ground.   Before the final round, Sanchez's corner yelled "pressure, pressure, pressure." The fighter delivered. Sanchez scored an early takedown and eventually got Thiago's back. The rest of the round, Sanchez used a body lock to control Thiago (13-3, 3-3 UFC) in several different positions. In the final minute, Sanchez worked the full mount and landed some heavy shots. One of the judges scored it 10-8 in the final stanza. Before the fight, Sanchez was debating whether he should return to the 155-pound weight class. This was a solid win that might keep him around at welterweight.

That's a lot to deal with but Ortiz says everything is okay now with Jameson."Things are back to normal now.

Strikeforce crew bullish on Cain's chances to pull the upset

Fight night is only a few days away and it's starting to feel like a great main event is on the way. Brock Lesnar is a slight favorite at minus-160, but there are tons of people picking Cain Velasquez, especially inside the fight world. Fight Magazine caught up with some of the folks around Strikeforce and most of them like Velasquez. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker and announcer Frank Shamrock tabbed the challenger to steal the belt. Of course, Shamrock prefaces his pick by saying that he taught the fight game to "Crazy" Bob Cook, Velasquez's trainer, at American Kickboxing Academy. Randy Couture, attending the EA MMA game intro, likes Lesnar but said Cain has the ability to tire the big guy. HDNet announcer and former UFC fighter Bas Rutten also thinks stamina is the key. Dan Henderson is in the Cain corner as well, saying that Velasquez is going to be too much for Lesnar. The capper is Fedor Emelianenko, who really doesn't make a pick and shrugs at the end.

Bellator: Lombard Defends; Frausto Wins Belt While Snapping Fujii's Streak

Filed under: Bellator, NewsHector Lombard became the first Bellator champion to successfully defend a championship, outlasting Alexander Shlemenko to retain the middleweight title in the main event of Bellator 34.

The win didn't come easily for the Cuban-born Lombard, however. After winning his last two fights in a combined 44 seconds, this one was a marathon, going the full 25 minutes to become the longest fight in his career.

As is his custom, Lombard came out guns blazing in the first round, rocking Shlemenko early as he looked for his fourth straight first-round finish, but Shlemenko weathered the storm and fought gamely throughout.

UFC 121 picks, Vegas-style: Velasquez looks to ruin 'Brocktober'

After UFC 100, Brock Lesnar was labeled an unstoppable force. Following a rough performance at UFC 116 against Shane Carwin, that kind of talk has died down. Was Lesnar overrated or is Carwin just that good? The next guy to put Lesnar's reputation to the test is Cain Velasquez. He's getting a lot of respect from bettors and fight insiders. Is he big enough to lock horns with Lesnar? Or will he wear out the monster? Damon Martin from MMAWeekly and Larry Pepe from ProMMARadio joined me on RawVegas.tv to breakdown the big fights in Anaheim this weekend.  UFC 121 odds (Courtesy Lagasse Stadium Las Vegas):  Cain Velasquez (+120) vs. Brock Lesnar (-150) -- UFC heavyweight title Martin Kampmann (+210) vs. Jake Shields (-270)Tito Ortiz (+130) vs. Matt Hamill (-160)Paulo Thiago (-110) vs. Diego Sanchez (-120)Tom Lawlor (Even) vs. Patrick Cote (-130)Paul Taylor (+200) vs. Sam Stout (-250)Matt Schaub (+170) vs. Gabe Gonzaga (-200)Ryan Jensen (+190) vs. Court McGee (-240)Mike Guymon (+140) vs. Daniel Roberts (-170)Chris Camozzi (Even) vs. Dongi Yang (-130)Gilbert Yvel (+150) vs. Jon Madsen (-180)

UFC 121: Cain Velasquez TKOs Brock Lesnar

by Michael David SmithThe UFC has a new heavyweight champion, as Cain Velasquez brutalized Brock Lesnar to win a first-round technical knockout Saturday at UFC 121.

The fight wasn't close, as Velasquez showed vastly superior technique and unloaded on Lesnar on the ground until Lesnar's face was a bloody mess and referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight.

"I trained for a five-round fight and that's what I was hoping for," Velasquez said afterward. "I wasn't expecting this. You can't expect a first-round stoppage." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

African-American bond may keep Jon Jones from facing Rashad Evans

After waiting an eternity, Rashad Evans will have the chance to regain the UFC light heavyweight title sometime in 2011. Fellow light heavyweight Jon Jones is on the fast track. Two more wins for the 24-year-old and fans will be howling for him to get a shot. But the UFC may have another problem on its hands with fighters from the same camp not wanting to square off. Jones said the friendship between he and Evans, who both train at Jackson's Submission Fighting in New Mexico, has a deeper connection. "Not that it has anything to do with race, but we're both African-American
guys and we're fighters. We've got a lot of similarities between family and all
this other type of stuff," Jones told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Jones (11-1, 6-1 UFC) is right there aren't a lot of African-Americans fighting at the highest level. It's part of the reason he chose to go so far away from home in Albuquerque. Aside from the chance to work with a guru like Greg Jackson, he saw a guy who came from the same background in Evans.  "Rashad's a unique character to me.
There's not many guys that I can relate to like Rashad, and preparing to do
physical damage to him just doesn't add up to me," said Jones. Much like AKA teammates Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, who may be faced with a similar decision if Koscheck upsets Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title, Jones says he and Evans are too tight to fight."Fighting Rashad is the last thing I'd ever want to do," Jones said. "To me,
being able to call Rashad when we're 40 years old and say, 'Let's go fishing,'
or something like that, that's more important than the paycheck we would get
today. I train with the guy. We've had conversations about personal things."This is a mounting issue for UFC matchmakers. Dana White is digging in on his stance. He doesn't understand why teammates won't fight each other and last week he think said they're afraid to lose a buddy.

UFC 121 press-conference notes: bonuses, retirement and more

With all that happened during UFC 121, the UFC and media had to get together to talk about it. The news from the UFC 121 postfight press conference:-- Fight of the Night bonuses were given to Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago, Submission of the Night was awarded to Daniel Roberts and the new heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez won Knockout of the Night. Each bonus was worth $70,000.-- Dana White said that when watching the monitors during the main event, he thought he saw Brock Lesnar verbally submit to the Cain Velasquez, but Velasquez said he didn't hear that.-- Velasquez said that he worked on the exact gameplan that he executed to win the fight, drilling the single leg takedown with Olympic wrestler and Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier. -- Jake Shields admitted that dropping down to welterweight from middleweight did take its toll. "I don't want to make excuses, but that was the first time that I've been at that weight in a long time." UFC president Dana White said that Shields did earn the welterweight title shot with the win over Kampmann. Shields will get his shot after the UFC-- Though he lost tonight, former UFC champ Tito Ortiz balked at the mention that he was near retirement. "Not even close to the end of my career. I need to get back to wrestling. I need to get back to my roots," Ortiz said. "The last few years, I've been through a lot, but I'm not a quitter. I'm healthy. I'm going to continue on. It sucks to lose, but I'm a person who will suck it up and continue on."Ortiz did not make any excuses for the loss and said that he was 100 percent healthy for the fight with Matt Hamill.-- Dana White said that he likes Diego Sanchez at welterweight, calling him big, strong and aggressive at that weight. Sanchez said that he is willing to do whatever the UFC wants, but White clarified that the weight class he fights at is Sanchez's decision. -- Brock Lesnar was not present at the press conference.

Court McGee comes back to submit Ryan Jensen at UFC 121

In his first bout since winning the 11th season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Court McGee won by submission over Ryan Jensen at UFC 121 in Anaheim, Calif. on Saturday.Ryan Jensen started with a takedown and a knockdown of McGee, and continued to throw hard throughout the first round. He landed flush shots and wobbled McGee, though McGee was able to get one good strike through and bloody Jensen's nose.Unfortunately for Jensen, he seemed to empty his gas tank in the first. The second round saw McGee come back stronger. He stuffed a Jensen takedown and began to close the distance with leg kicks. Jensen slowed down and was taken down by McGee near the end of the round.McGee controlled the third, starting with a quick takedown then following it up with ground and pound. Jensen had no defense as McGee moved to full mount, rained down elbows and then trapped Jensen's arm for an arm triangle. Jensen tapped at 1:21 in the third.

Ellenberger uses the power of Twitter to call out 'hated' Shields

UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger wants a piece of Jake Shields, and he's using his mouth to try to make it happen. Never mind that Shields has already cemented his title shot with a win over Martin Kampmann, and that Ellenberger is in line behind Jon Fitch and Carlos Condit, a fighter who has beaten Ellenberger. He wants Shields, and he is using the power of Twitter to try to sway the powers-that-be in the UFC. Ellenberger -- who has recent TKO wins over John Howard and Mike Pyle -- has called out Shields several times on Twitter in the last few days, questioning Shields' title shot immediately after the fight, then going on to say:Ellenberger isn't the first fighter to use a strategy of asking for fights to move up for a bout. Dan Hardy, "King Mo" Lawal and Ben Saunders have all gotten a shot at top fights by simply asking for them. Ellenberger would have to clear a lot of hurdles to get a shot at Shields before Shields fights either Georges St. Pierre or Josh Koscheck for the UFC welterweight title, but stranger things have happened in MMA.UPDATE: Cagewriter spoke with Ellenberger via text, and he said that both Jake Shields and the UFC have not responded to his tweets. "But it's only a matter of time. Fake Shields is a fraud. Excuse me, Miss Piggy is a fraud," Ellenberger said. Why Miss Piggy?"When he fights, he reminds me of Miss Piggy, with hs softness and feminine charm."Ellenberger's beef with Shields comes from before both fighters were with the UFC. He says that he had a signed contract to fight Shields, but Shields' father (and manager) pulled him out of the bout because it was a bad match-up. Ellenberger admits that Condit and Fitch also have a claim on a bout with Shields, but, "I hate him more."

Yahoo's Iole on big merger: The pressure is on to win

All fighters feel a sense of urgency but with today's announcement that the WEC's roster is folding into the UFC, the final two WEC cards will be pressure packed. Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole says in the short run with a few less cards on the schedule mid-level fighters up and down the UFC/WEC roster will be under the gun to win.The increased roster depth now makes it easier for the UFC to pitch new shows to existing or new networks. If you're a fighter, you just have to win to keep yourself in the mix for what could be on the horizon in 2011. Some of the key pressure fights at WEC 52 include:Raphael Assuncao v. L.C. DavisAssuncao has lost two straight which puts the Brazilian at risk. LC Davis needs a win to erase the bad taste of getting choked out by Josh Grispi.   Anthony Njokuani v. Edwards FaalolotoAt the start of 2010, Njokuani was on the fast track to a title shot at 155 pounds. His weak takedown defense did him in against Shane Roller and even more surprising he was beat on the feet by newcomer Maciej Jewtuszko. A third straight loss, especially against a WEC newcomer could be devastating to his future.Cub Swanson v. Mackens SermerzierSwanson has toiled in obscurity for a while and would love nothing better than the big stage in UFC. He's been rotating between winning and losing. He needs a win here. The same goes for Sermerzier, who's on a two-fight losing streak.

UFC-WEC Merger Gives Lighter Weight Fighters Chance on Big League Stage

Filed under: UFC, WECOver a year ago, I sat in a Dallas hotel lobby with Ben Henderson telling me of his goal to be considered the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artist on the planet. He is a polite, well-spoken young man, and he said this in the most humble way you could imagine.

I smiled at his ambition but I also quietly wondered to myself, How would this talented young athlete accomplish such a goal in the WEC when everybody knew it was, well, not the UFC. Henderson went on to capture the WEC lightweight championship but he's made barely a dent in the lightweight world top 10.

Henderson's not the only guy to have big dreams in a small company. The same can be said for Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber, Dominick Cruz and more. But with the news of the the UFC-WEC merger, opportunity abounds for everyone.

A simple change of three letters and a logo will tilt the MMA landscape further in Zuffa's favor and change the fortunes of lower weight-class fighters across the world.

Online hack puts UFC 121 free-stream link in top-stories list on newspaper site

Most of us know, if you search hard enough on the Internet, you can view just about anything you want in the world of sports. That includes fighting pay-per-views. But it does take some work and patience. Unless you just go to your local paper and its website provides an easy path. That's what happened this weekend at the San Francisco Chronicle's website. A link to a free stream of UFC 121 was featured in on top-10 most-read list. UPDATE: There was a good explanation behind the link appearing on major websites across the country and the Chronicle. PRWeb was hacked. As we thought, there was no agenda on the part of the paper. According to FightOpinion.com, the link pointed to this release from something called PRWeb:New York, NY (PRWEB) October 23, 2010Watch UFC 121 live Stream including Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez, Kampmann vs Shields, Hamill vs Ortiz, Sanchez vs Thiago, Gonzaga vs Schaub. Are you a huge fan of UFC 121? So get connected and watch the entire UFC 121 MMA event, including the pre and post show, and all UFC 121 fight cards!Click here to watch UFC 121 live stream online now.The conspiracy theorists were howling that this may have had something to do with  the little tiff between the newspaper and UFC president Dana White before UFC 117. Via Twitter, White shredded the bosses at the paper for allegedly telling the UFC PR department that it wasn't covering the event and doing so in rude fashion. The philosophical battle between the newspaper and the fight promotion became good message-board fodder over at sportsjournalists.com. Most of the commenters supported the Chronicle's stance on MMA. And after Cain Velasquez downed Brock Lesnar, you even had a few commenters suggest that the fight was fixed. The story now is this link that spent a good time on the Chronicle's website. I'm 99 percent certain that it was simply an error.

Better Late Than Never: UFC-WEC Merger Is Long Overdue

Filed under: UFC, WECIt's about time. After years of operating the WEC as a little brother organization to the UFC, Zuffa has finally decided to do the sensible thing and bring all its fighters under one roof. It was a long wait, but at least it's over.

The way UFC president Dana White tells it, this was all about timing. It was the perfect plan and now is the perfect time to implement it. Then again, White's never been afraid to indulge in a little revisionist history when it suits him, so take that explanation with a grain of salt.

The truth is, the WEC has long suffered from the same branding problem that every other competing MMA organization has faced. To many casual fans, the UFC is MMA. That's great for the industry leader, but not so great for little brother. That's why, as exciting as the WEC fights have been, ratings have lagged.

UFC 121: Court McGee Comes Back to Submit Ryan Jensen

by Michael David SmithIn his first fight since winning Season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter, Court McGee looked like he wasn't ready for prime time in the early going against Ryan Jensen, only to come back and win a hard-earned third-round submission victory at UFC 121.

It was a great comeback for McGee, who improves to 13-1 in his pro MMA career. Jensen falls to 15-7. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Team Fedor asks, now who's overrated?

Ah, what could've been. There was a day when Dana White dreamed of matching Brock Lesnar and Fedor Emelianenko at Cowboys Stadium. That could still be a mega-fight but some of the luster has worn off since both have now fallen in 2010. White Tweeted a little smiley face the night that Fedor was upset by Fabricio Werdum back in June. The Russian contigent that works with Fedor waited a few days, but now it's their turn to chuckle at Lesnar's fall from grace."I have long said that Lesnar is more of a product of UFC’s PR rather than a serious fighter and that fight clearly confirmed it," said Fedor's manager Vadim Finkelchtein in an interview on AllBoxing.com. "I do not want to say that Lesnar is a nobody, but he has very little experience. What does he have six fights in MMA? He's a pure product UFC, who met a real fighter and he lost."  He said Cain Velasquez can truly be promoted as one of the best heavyweights in the world. "In my opinion, he is a very good fighter. Capable and strong," said Finkelchtein. "The UFC can now present him as the best in the world and it is certainly debatable, but he's really a fighter, not a product of PR."He also denied that M-1 and Fedor have spoken anytime recently with the UFC. White told a story recently of meeting Fedor face-to-face for the first time. Finkelchtein said that kind of talk was stupidity and was very strong about re-signing with Showtime."Now we are in active negotiations with Showtime on a contract extension, and perhaps we will renew it. But the UFC does not offer such opportunities and imposes its monopoly conditions. They believe that everyone should be in the UFC. We would love to fight with Lesnar, and Velasquez and all but why should we give up all these undertakings, all the years spent on Fedor’s development will go to them? Fedor did not grow in the UFC, right? So why should he go to the UFC? If Dana White wants to fight, he can easily hold it, because we do not mind. And while the contract with Showtime gives us more opportunities."There you have it. Both fighters have fallen in 2010 but neither side is going to budge when it comes to getting Fedor to the world's biggest stage.

Lesnar's going hunting after the fight, so the viking beard stays

Good thing George Steinbrenner doesn't run the UFC. The recently deceased Yankee owner required that his athletes be clean shaven. A "Big Stein" versus Brock Lesnar showdown over facial hair may have been one for the ages. Lesnar loves his new whiskers, telling the audience and media at the UFC 121 prefight press conference that the beard is staying. "I'm keeping it. I'm going hunting. I'm leaving the next day and heading up to Canada," said Lesnar.  Lesnar is embracing his Nordic looks."It's cold out. I'm going to get in the viking ship and row my way up into the great white north," chuckled Lesnar. The beard may take on a pinkish hue if Lesnar gets cut like he did in the fight against Shane Carwin. He might look like his wrestling buddies Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes when they used to slice themselves open. Lesnar also added that he's happy to visit Canada even though that's where he experienced a lot of medical missteps before his stomach ailment was correctly diagnosed back in the U.S."I love Canada. I've got a house in Canada. I love the hunting," said Lesnar. "I could've been anywhere and got poor service. I've been in the United States and gotten poor service."When he first returned to fighting, Lesnar angered many Canadians by ripping their healthcare system.

Randy Couture Admits Title Runs Are Behind Him, Fighting Future in Doubt

Filed under: UFC, NewsLast month, MMA Fighting reported the possibility that five-time UFC champion Randy Couture would never fight again. Naturally, some people doubted the likelihood that the seemingly ageless Couture had seen his last action in the octagon, perhaps waiting to hear something from the legend himself.

Now the 47-year-old Hall of Famer has spoken, and while he didn't flat out say he was done, it seems clear that Couture's fighting future is hazy at best, or as his lawyer Sam Spira termed it, a "toss-up."

Want to know how to watch UFC 121 live online free? Simply download the new award-winning TV software, Satellite Direct, and watch UFC 121 on your PC. UFC 121 will take place at 10:00 PM EDT at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. Over 660,000 fans have been using the software to watch UFC 121 online. That said, the UFC, which is very bullish on making sure its product is paid for, has to look into how this happened.   Tip via FightOpinion.com
