UFC 121: Matt Hamill Hammers Tito Ortiz
Hamill beat Ortiz up for 15 minutes, battering Ortiz's face with punches in the stand-up and elbows on the ground, and easily won a unanimous decision. Considering that Ortiz hasn't won since beating Ken Shamrock on October 10, 2006, it may be time for the UFC to tell Ortiz he's no longer good enough to compete in the Octagon.
"There are two words I want to tell you," an emotional Hamill said to Ortiz after beating his former teacher. "Thank you." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hughes says Tito might be finished
myself interested. Tito was on the card, against (Matt) Hamill and I didn’t think there
was any way for Tito to win," said Hughes on Matt-Hughes.com.Keep in mind, Hughes and Ortiz have never really been chummy. "Tito’s got that clothing line out, Team Punishment, and when I see people
wearing the shirts, I always tease them that it should be "Team Punished;" but I
would even go out on a limb and say that’s the last time we see Tito in the
UFC," said Hughes. The UFC cut veteran Patrick Cote today. Is Tito next? There's a few factors to consider. He could fight for another promotion and help raise their profile. But at $250,000 a fight is it worth it to keep Ortiz around so he can't fight elsewhere? He's still one of the bigger names to casual fans and does a nice job promotionally. With what looks a new network television deal on the way for the UFC and new audiences on the horizon in India and China, the promotion certainly has the resources to reward Ortiz for being one of the guys who carried the whole deal in the early 2000's.On a side note, Hughes deserves the same sort of treatment. He'd be great spokesperson before events. He made a good point in his UFC 121 commentary about the UFC broadcast team needing some balance. Hughes called out analyst Joe Rogan for going overboard on how dominant Jake Shields' grappling was versus Martin Kampmann. What if Hughes was the third man in the booth from time-to-time and actually took over the postfight role of Rogan in the cage? HBO thrives with a three-man, it might be time for the UFC to consider doing the same.

Slow Down Expectations for Jose Aldo, Jon Jones
And so if you're hoping to see Aldo in the Octagon or Jones fighting for a belt, don't hold your breath.
White said on The Fight Fix on CSN Washington that Aldo had a chance to move into the UFC lightweight division and fight Kenny Florian, but Aldo chose instead to keep defending his featherweight belt. And he said Jones won't fight for the light heavyweight title for at least a year. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gerald Harris Living His UFC Dream, Not Forgetting the Path to Get There
Harris had 10 pro fights under his belt when he won a spot on Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter in 2008. He won his first fight in the house, but lost his next to eventual champ Amir Sadollah.
Normally, the majority of fighters on TUF seasons get one more crack on the season finale card. But for TUF 7, just five fighters from the show fought on the finale - and Harris wasn't one of them.
He returned to the relative obscurity of regional shows - but with only one goal in mind: win, win, win and get back to the UFC.

Bellator: Lombard Defends; Frausto Wins Belt While Snapping Fujii's Streak
The win didn't come easily for the Cuban-born Lombard, however. After winning his last two fights in a combined 44 seconds, this one was a marathon, going the full 25 minutes to become the longest fight in his career.
As is his custom, Lombard came out guns blazing in the first round, rocking Shlemenko early as he looked for his fourth straight first-round finish, but Shlemenko weathered the storm and fought gamely throughout.

UFC 121: Cain Velasquez TKOs Brock Lesnar
The fight wasn't close, as Velasquez showed vastly superior technique and unloaded on Lesnar on the ground until Lesnar's face was a bloody mess and referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight.
"I trained for a five-round fight and that's what I was hoping for," Velasquez said afterward. "I wasn't expecting this. You can't expect a first-round stoppage." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

African-American bond may keep Jon Jones from facing Rashad Evans
guys and we're fighters. We've got a lot of similarities between family and all
this other type of stuff," Jones told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Jones (11-1, 6-1 UFC) is right there aren't a lot of African-Americans fighting at the highest level. It's part of the reason he chose to go so far away from home in Albuquerque. Aside from the chance to work with a guru like Greg Jackson, he saw a guy who came from the same background in Evans. "Rashad's a unique character to me.
There's not many guys that I can relate to like Rashad, and preparing to do
physical damage to him just doesn't add up to me," said Jones. Much like AKA teammates Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, who may be faced with a similar decision if Koscheck upsets Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title, Jones says he and Evans are too tight to fight."Fighting Rashad is the last thing I'd ever want to do," Jones said. "To me,
being able to call Rashad when we're 40 years old and say, 'Let's go fishing,'
or something like that, that's more important than the paycheck we would get
today. I train with the guy. We've had conversations about personal things."This is a mounting issue for UFC matchmakers. Dana White is digging in on his stance. He doesn't understand why teammates won't fight each other and last week he think said they're afraid to lose a buddy.

UFC-WEC Merger Gives Lighter Weight Fighters Chance on Big League Stage
I smiled at his ambition but I also quietly wondered to myself, How would this talented young athlete accomplish such a goal in the WEC when everybody knew it was, well, not the UFC. Henderson went on to capture the WEC lightweight championship but he's made barely a dent in the lightweight world top 10.
Henderson's not the only guy to have big dreams in a small company. The same can be said for Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber, Dominick Cruz and more. But with the news of the the UFC-WEC merger, opportunity abounds for everyone.
A simple change of three letters and a logo will tilt the MMA landscape further in Zuffa's favor and change the fortunes of lower weight-class fighters across the world.

Better Late Than Never: UFC-WEC Merger Is Long Overdue
The way UFC president Dana White tells it, this was all about timing. It was the perfect plan and now is the perfect time to implement it. Then again, White's never been afraid to indulge in a little revisionist history when it suits him, so take that explanation with a grain of salt.
The truth is, the WEC has long suffered from the same branding problem that every other competing MMA organization has faced. To many casual fans, the UFC is MMA. That's great for the industry leader, but not so great for little brother. That's why, as exciting as the WEC fights have been, ratings have lagged.
