Lullo replaces Elkins to complete UFC 123 line-up

Mike Lullo out of suburban Chicago is the latest addition to UFC 123. He is replacing the injured Darren Elkins to face Edson Barboza, and is on an eight-fight win streak. Lullo trains at Midwest Training Center where he has worked with Clay Guida, and is pictured above winning by gogoplata over Jeremy Castro in June.

There is one more thing you should know about Lullo:

He is my cousin, and full disclosure, I am incredibly proud of Mikey for getting one step closer to his dream. Cagewriter will be on hand to cover Lullo, "Rampage" Jackson, Lyoto Machida and all of the other fighters at UFC 123 next week.

Key to the Jets victory? UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar

The New York Jets had a rough game on Sunday. Heading into the fourth quarter, they led the Houston Texans 20-7, but they then gave up 20 fourth quarter points, and were losing with just seconds left in the game. Then QB Mark Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes for a touchdown with 10 seconds on the clock, giving the Jets the win. That come from behind victory helped solidify the Jets spot atop the AFC East.

Just who inspired that come from behind victory? Frankie Edgar, the UFC lightweight champ. Jets coach Rex Ryan brought in Edgar to speak to his player the night before the game, and Edgar talked to the team about mental toughness.

According to Sanchez, it made a difference. Via press release:

Talk about a guy who is mentally tough and physically tough. He came in and spoke to the team last night. It was a perfect time. He talked about never giving up, being counted out, playing until the end; fighting and believing in yourself and your team and the people around you.

Edgar, a native New Jerseyan and a former wrestling coach at Rutgers University, enjoyed the game from the front row of the New Meadowlands. His next challenge is Gray Maynard, who Edgar will fight on Jan. 1 at UFC 125.

State of the Strikeforce Welterweights

by Michael David SmithNick Diaz is one of Strikeforce's most recognizable fighters, and he's the unquestioned star of the welterweight division. But does Strikeforce have anyone to challenge him at 170 pounds?

That's one of the big questions for Strikeforce in 2011. Some people think Diaz is one of the truly elite welterweights in all of MMA, while others think it's impossible to say that because he hasn't really been tested in Strikeforce. Actually, both might be right.

So can someone test Diaz in the next year? We take a look at the state of the Strikeforce welterweight division below.

Munoz and Simpson: Fighters put friendship aside at UFC 123

Mark Munoz and Aaron Simpson are remarkably similar. Both have strong wrestling pedigrees: Munoz was a national champion at Oklahoma St. while Simpson was an All-American at Arizona St. They both coached in the wrestling Pac-10. Munoz helped UC-Davis to their first national champion, and Simpson was key to success at both Arizona St. and Cal Tech. They both got into the MMA game relatively late, but won right from the start. Munoz is 8-2 and Simpson is 7-1.

They are old friends, and even helped each other get into MMA when coaching wrestling. Check the 3:30 point in the video to hear how Simpson and Munoz discussed getting into MMA while coaching at the NCAA championships in 2007 at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich.

When they fight at UFC 123 at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich., two remarkably similar men will have to put their friendship aside. Munoz admits that he's not looking forward to punching Simpson, but he'll find a way.

"No, I'm not. I'll try to picture somebody else's face in front of him."

Early End to First Round Cost Maiquel Falcao at UFC 123

by Michael David SmithMaiquel Falcao has been criticized for his handling of the third round in his UFC 123 win over Gerald Harris, with UFC President Dana White admonishing Falcao that he was wrong to play it safe after winning the first two rounds on the judges' scorecards. White said his message to Falcao after the third round was that "This isn't the Ultimate Staring Competition, it's the Ultimate Fighting Championship."

But while it's true that Falcao was unimpressive in the third round, it's been widely overlooked that the fight never should have gone to the third round -- or even the second round.

In fact, Falcao was about to submit Harris at the end of the first round, but the horn to end the round sounded seven seconds early, depriving Falcao of what almost certainly would have been a first-round submission victory.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- In UFC president Dana White's latest video blog for UFC 123, we learn that Antoine Dodson, of "The Bed Intruder Song" fame, is a big Quinton "Rampage" Jackson fan. It's worth watching the whole thing -- the language is NSFW -- but the first minute is golden.

Amazing. Not only that, but UFC lightweight Kenny Florian and color commentator Joe Rogan are huge Dodson fans, then again, who isn't? Davis invents his own submission to take out Boetsch at UFC 123

Phil Davis looks more impressive every time he hits the Octagon. The former Penn State wrestler had only three fights under his belt in the UFC, but made Tim Boetsch look like the guy with little experience.

Davis absolutely dominated the grappling game against the former Div. 1 wrestler at Lock Haven. Then he worked some submission magic. With Boetsch pinned against the cage, Davis switched from a conventional arm lock and cranked his opponent's arm behind his back. The pain was too much to take for Boetsch, who tapped at 2:55 of the second round.

UPDATE: Davis' "Mr. Wonderful" submission nabbed him the submission of the night award and an $80,000 bonus.

Davis, 26, is a perfect 8-0 in MMA. He's beginning to move into top prospect status at light heavyweight along with Jon Jones and Ryan Bader. This was a return fight for Boetsch in the UFC, after four straight wins with smaller promotions.

Strikeforce, IFL vet Hieron signs with Bellator

Bellator sent shockwaves through MMA in March by signing former UFC star Roger Huerta. They pulled out another surprise this morning when they announced the signing of Jay Hieron, a veteran MMA fighter who is on a seven-fight winning streak. He will be a part of Bellator's season four tournament.

"Jay Hieron is a fantastic signing for us at 170 lbs.," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney via press release. "Jay is a world-class fighter with serious talent.  I can’t wait to see him back on National television competing against other top fighters where he belongs.  Jay’s a spectacular addition to  our upcoming season 4 welterweight tournament, where he could earn a shot at our Bellator Welterweight World Champion, Ben Askren."

Signing Huerta ended up being a bust for Strikeforce, as he was upset by eventual lightweight tournament champ Pat Curran. Then lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez destroyed Huerta in a two-round TKO. Hieron will have to work his way up through the tournament, just as Huerta was expected to do.

Hieron was most recently with Strikeforce, but was assumed to be headed to the UFC when he left SF. But he was vague about where he was going in an August interview.

"Everything's looking good right now," he continued. "I'm definitely going to fight in 2010. There's definitely offers out there, but there's a couple things I'm going to work out. Hopefully we'll be signed soon and fighting. I want to be the best in the world and going through all the stuff I've gone through has made me stronger."

His last fight was in January of 2010, and he'll be close to meeting his deadline of fighting again this year. Bellator's fourth season is scheduled to start in January, though they don't have a television deal lined up just yet.

State of the Strikeforce Heavyweights

by Michael David SmithThe list of names in Strikeforce's heavyweight division is undeniably impressive: Former No. 1 fighter in the world Fedor Emelianenko. The man who beat him, Fabricio Werdum. Former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett. Hot prospects Daniel Cormier and Shane del Rosario. And the champion, K-1 wrecking machine Alistair Overeem.

The biggest question facing Strikeforce is whether it can actually get all of those fighters -- and Antonio Silva and Brett Rogers and Lavar Johnson and so on -- into the cage, fighting each other. The heavyweight talent is there. The heavyweight fights came all too infrequently in 2010, and as we take a look below at the state of Strikeforce's heavyweight division, we offer some suggestions on what should happen in 2011.

Falcao's submission win at UFC 123 blown by timekeeper

Maiquel Falcao was ripped to shreds throughout the third round of his fight against Gerald Harris. The criticism was well-deserved. He did nothing over the final five minutes of the fight, taking the safe route to victory during his UFC debut. That's not a great way to win over the promotion, Dana White and fans in attendance.

Amazingly, the 16,000-plus in attendance and everyone cageside failed to notice that the fight probably should've been over in the first round.

UPDATE: A good point from one of our readers. Even though Falcao still got a win, the error may have cost him the $80,000 submission of the night bonus. That said, Phil Davis' "Mr. Wonderful" improv submission was pretty sweet.

Falcao locked on a nasty rear-naked choke with 13 seconds left in the round. A little over seven seconds later, the horn sounded to end the round.

There was a clear timing error and no one noticed it.

This isn't the first time there's been clock issues in the Motor City.

NBA bettors thought there was a massive scandal in the mid 80's going down at Pistons' games.

There was a crew operating on the Las Vegas Strip, getting down all it could on NBA totals. Two things made this NBA betting syndicate unique. First, they only bet on Detroit Pistons games. Sometimes they bet 'over' and sometimes they bet 'under' but they always risked a ton of money.

Second, they were very, very good, at one point during their three-year run winning 16-of-18 games, a streak which tested the bottom lines of many books.

After a while, word spread that the Pistons Syndicate had someone on the inside. Reportedly, it was the Detroit timekeeper, a man in a position to manipulate seconds on the end of each play to either add or subtract time from the game clock. Supposedly, the syndicate bet 'over' when he added time and 'under' when he subtracted it.

The only problem with this revelation was that it wasn't true. Bookmakers finally proved this to themselves when they were allowed to review the tapes of several Detroit games. A lot of the bet takers timed the games themselves and found that there was no manipulation of the clock.

At UFC 123, there was no "inside job" to save Harris or ensure the over, but whoever was working the horn and clock screwed Falcao out of a chance for a submission victory.

TUF vets Sadollah and Soszynski outclass opponents at UFC 122

Amir Sadollah just entered his 30's but he's far from a finished product in MMA. The Virginian spent most of his 20's learning the discipline of muay thai and working as a full-time medical tech. He went for broke on Season 7 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and is now a full-time MMA fighter. You can see his game coming together. Sadollah outhustled a skilled youngster in Peter Sobotta. By the end of the fight, the German could barely lift his hands as Sadollah scored a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three cards.

Sadollah (4-2, 4-2 UFC) pushed the pace from the opening bell. He let loose with well placed kick-punch combinations. As the fight moved into the second, Sadollah's work with leg kicks started to take its toll. Sobotta (8-4, 0-3 UFC) tried to match the output but never landed anything significant. He had very little left in the final round.

The champ from TUF 7 got his career back on track with the win. A loss may have put Sadollah's gig with the promotion in jeopardy.

Soszynski knocks around Reljic for fifth UFC win

Krzysztof Soszynski is a big dude to take head on. Goran Reljic tried to match the Polish muscle man on the feet but wilted in the final round. Over three hard rounds, Soszynski took some damage but was able to get the nod on all the scorecards, 30-27.

Reljic, a student of Croatian legend Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, tried to work his kicking game in the early going but Soszynski was able to time the attempts and fire back with some nasty counter shots. Reljic got the message early when he ate some big shots from the former heavyweight. The Croatian actually changed his gameplan and tried to work for takedowns. He got Soszynski (22-10, 5-2 UFC) on his back with 1:20 left in the first but did little damage on the ground.

The second was highlighted mostly by clinch work along the cage. The bigger, stronger Soszysnki wore down Reljic with some good knees. The fight hit the deck early in the third with Soszysnki working hip control. He pounded away with some huge shots as Reljic tried to scramble but wasn't able to rise to his for 90 seconds. Back on the feet, Soszynski tried for a thai clinch and Reljic just flopped to his back where he took more punches and hammer fists.

Reljic (8-3, 1-3 UFC) opened his UFC career with a dynamic knockout win over Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84.  He battled injuries for the rest of 2008 and 2009. This year hasn't been kind. He's lost three straight decisions and is probably done with the promotion.

UFC 123: Maiquel Falcao Beats Gerald Harris in Unimpressive Fashion

by Michael David SmithBrazilian newcomer Maiquel Falcao didn't do anything to endear himself to the UFC fans on Saturday at UFC 123, beating Gerald Harris by unanimous decision but doing it in fairly dull fashion, and doing it after a fight that included a dirty tactic of holding onto a choke after the bell rang.

Munoz shows off well-rounded game in outlasting Simpson at UFC 123

Mark Munoz had a daunting puzzle to solve at UFC 123. He was basically facing a carbon copy of himself in Aaron Simpson. So it was no surprise to see the former NCAA wrestlers nullify each other on the grappling front. Munoz showed off a more impressive arsenal in the striking game and a little more in the stamina department in the final round to take a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all cards.

Munoz, an NCAA champ out of Oklahoma State, was a half-second behind in the first round. He got tagged on the feet and kept getting his leg kicks caught. In the second, Munoz did more with his stand up work, including a beautiful swinging elbow that landed coming out of a clinch, and he really nailed Simpson with a head kick.

Simpson, an two-time All-American at Arizona State, has struggled in recent fights with his conditioning. He thought he had solved those woes by a paying closer attention to his diet before the fight. Simpson looked better but he was definitely the less fresh fighter in the final round.

He scored a takedown just 25 seconds into the third but then got easily reversed by Munoz. With hip control, Munoz got off some excellent punches to the head. The rest of the round was spent primarily in clinch position along the cage. They slugged away at each other, but it was Munoz who landed the heavier shots.

Munoz (9-2, 4-2 UFC) is now 4-1 down at middleweight with his only loss coming against future title challenger Yushin Okami. After a 3-0 start wth the promotion, Simpson (7-2, 3-2 UFC) has dropped two straight.

Kelly, Barboza undercard winners at UFC 123

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Paul Kelly provided fireworks at UFC 123 with a TKO of T.J. O'Brien. The two made the first round a slugfest. Kelly continually moved forward and pressed the pace. Both landed punishing blows, with O'Brien favoring his knees, while Kelly landed hook after hook.

Kelly (pictured on top) came out swinging in the second round, and crumbed O'Brien with an onslaught of punches. He could not finish him off, so he stood up and invited O'Brien to do the same. O'Brien took advantage by taking Kelly down and landing right in full-mount. Kelly appeared to be in trouble until he reversed position and stretched Kelly out in a crucifix position, landing punch after punch with O'Brien helpless to block them. The fight was finally stopped at 3:16 in the second round.

Barboza whips Lullo's legs for win

Edson Barboza (7-0) used two rounds of hard kicks to the leg of Mike Lullo (8-2) in both men's UFC debut to get a ref stoppage at :26 of the third round.

Lullo, a wrestler, tried to counter the constant low kicks that he had no answer for by moving in for takedowns, but when he would get in, Barboza (pictured on right) was able to throw him hard to the mat. While on the mat, Lullo had his best success, scoring with punches while tying Barboza up from the bottom. But Barboza was always able to get up.

By the latter stages of the second round, Barboza's kicks were putting Lullo down and he was struggling just to get his feet, and having trouble moving. He was just about finished at the end of the second round, and when round three opened with the same low kicks, with him going down two more times before the fight was stopped.

Lentz wins a close split decision to kick off UFC 123

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Nick Lentz started out UFC 123 with controversy, beating Tyson Griffin in a split decision, 29-28, 27-30 and 29-28 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit on Saturday.

Griffin and Lentz switched control often in the first round, with Lentz striking first with a takedown, and then Griffin reversing position and driving Lentz in the fence for much of the round. They then exchanged blows during the final minute of the round, with Lentz getting the better of striking. Griffin finished the round with an ineffective slam of Lentz.

Their stand-up drew boos from the crowd in suburban Detroit early in the second round, but that seemed to spur them on. They started to exchange more punches and kicks, until Griffin took down Lentz with about a minute and a half left in the round. Griffin tried for ground and pound but had trouble getting anything going.

Griffin wobbled Lentz to start the third and final round, and followed that up with several unanswered punches. Lentz tried for a takedown to stop the onslaught, but Griffin ended up on top. With a profusely bleeding face, Lentz was able to reverse position with a slam of Griffin. He tried for a chicken wing submission, but Griffin somehow got out of it and remained in control for the rest of the round.

The result elicited loud boos from the crowd, who were surprised that Griffin did not win. His record falls to 14-5 while Lentz's improves to 21-4.

Rampage Jackson Worries Lyoto Machida Will Give Him a Boring Fight

by Michael David SmithRampage JacksonWhen a UFC fighter goes on SportsCenter two days before his fight, he's usually expected to try to sell the viewers on a fight that he guarantees is going to be a "brawl" or a "barn burner" or a "slugfest" or whatever other word you want to use to describe the kinds of fights that will make the casual MMA fan watching ESPN buy the pay-per-view.

That's not what Rampage Jackson did on Thursday morning.

Instead, Jackson went on SportsCenter and described his fight with Lyoto Machida Saturday night at UFC 123 as one that could easily be boring.

The judges scored the fight for Falcao 29-27, 29-28 and 29-28, improving Falcao's professional record to 26-3. Harris, who had been on a tear this year, fell to 17-3.

UFC 123: Phil Davis Submits Tim Boetsch

by Michael David SmithPhil Davis showed Saturday night at UFC 123 why he's one of the most promising young light heavyweights in mixed martial arts, submitting Tim Boetsch with a very impressive kimura from the top for a second-round victory that improved Davis's record to 8-0.

Davis came out throwing a lot of kicks in the early going, landing some but also throwing a couple of them too slowly and allowing Boetsch to catch them. About halfway through the first round Davis, an NCAA champion wrestler at Penn State, went for a takedown and got on top of Boetsch, completely controlling him. It was a round that very easily could have gone 10-8 for Davis.

MMA Top 10 Light Heavyweights: Who's No. 2?

When you're trying to rank MMA fighters, it's easy to say you'll just rank them based on who they've beaten and who they've lost to inside the cage. It's a lot harder to actually create the rankings when you realize that it's mathematically impossible to rank every fighter ahead of the guys he's beaten and behind the guys who have beaten him.

That's the challenge of picking the No. 2 light heavyweight in the world right now. UFC light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua is No. 1, but there are three candidates for No. 2: Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans. And there's simply no way to rank those three without putting one of them behind someone he's beaten, and another one ahead of a man who has beaten him. Machida beat Evans, Evans beat Rampage, and Rampage beat Machida. Any way you slice it, someone has to get ranked ahead of someone who beat him in the cage.

So who's No. 2? I make my choice below.
