Josh Koscheck Has Grown, Along With 'The Ultimate Fighter'

by Michael David SmithWhen Josh Koscheck first agreed to take a spot on The Ultimate Fighter, the reality TV show the UFC first began showing on Spike in 2005, he didn't know what to expect. And he certainly didn't know that the show would reach its 12th season, that his own MMA career would progress to the point where he's the coach on that season, and that he'd be months away from fighting for a UFC title.

"I don't think anybody knew that it was going to take off," Koscheck said of that first season. "The UFC didn't know, Spike didn't know, no one in the media knew -- there was pretty much three web sites that covered MMA. When The Ultimate Fighter came out, after the first couple episodes the ratings were huge for the demographics they wanted and they thought they had something, and then the Finale was just off the hook with Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar fighting. That's when we knew it was for real, and now we have an opportunity to make some money as fighters." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jim Miller deals much bigger Gleison Tibau a loss at UFN 22

Jim Miller's been called midget by a previous opponent and he was facing a giant of the lightweight division in Gleison Tibau, but challengers are quickly learning that the little guy has plenty of fight in him. Miller consistently found a home for his straight left and avoided staying on the ground against Tibau, an excellent ground and pounder. In a good back-and-forth fight, Miller picked up another UFC win via unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, at Ultimate Fight Night 22 in Austin, Texas. It was the fifth straight win with the promotion for the mighty mite. Tibau (31-7, 7-5 UFC) is simply massive for the 155-pound division. After re-hydrating, he walks to the Octagon at well over 170 pounds while Miller is a small lightweight at just 5-foot-6. But Miller never had an issue from a power standpoint in Wednesday night's fight. Tibau scored several solid double-leg takedowns throughout the fight but could never maintain the position to do any real damage. Meanwhile, when they were standing and striking, Miller was the faster and more accurate fighter. He landed a few good leg kicks and his left hand was the difference in the fight. Give credit to Tibau, he's got a chin. He got blasted several times and stayed on his feet. The closest he came to going down was in the second round. Miller (17-2, 7-1 UFC) crushed him with a left and Tibau's knees buckled. The Brazilian got on his horse, literally running to his left. Once Miller caught him, he was able to score a quick takedown. But Tibau recovered quickly and rose to his feet in seconds. That scenario and a better land rate for Miller was more than enough to impress the judges.

Ruediger puts aside training Paris to face 'Tellys'

Gabe Ruediger lives another day in the UFC. The heel from Season 5 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and a quick loser against Joe Lauzon in his return to the promotion after a  near three-year absence, Ruediger will get another shot on the Octagon against Paul "Tellys" Kelly at UFC 123 in late November, according to MMAWeekly.com.Ruediger was steamrolled by Lauzon in less than two minutes at UFC 118. Oddly enough, he popped up on the gossip website scene with a bizarre video where he was "training" Paris Hilton. One would assume this is a must-win fight for Ruediger (17-6, 0-2 UFC). He took the Lauzon fight on short notice but this time he's got plenty of notice for a full training camp. Kelly (10-3, 4-3 UFC) is in need of a win as well after dropping two of his last three fights.  Ruediger's reputation took a beating from his appearance on TUF 5. He was pictured eating and relaxing before his first fight and then couldn't make weight. He was quite the drama queen and quit before ever making it to the scale. UFC Dana White booted him from the TUF house and dismissed him from the show. The UFC elected not to give Ruediger an official fight after the season was over.  Tip on Hilton video via Fightlinker

UFC 119 on tap: Can Cro Cop fight with injured eye?

It's always something with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. His ride with UFC has been tumultuous. Between confusion over reports that he was bailing on the organization after UFC 99 and a litany of prefight injuries, Cro Cop has been an adventure for the promotion. The latest drama will play out this week. Hopefully it's done by tomorrow or Wednesday. A Croatian report emerged last week that the main eventer at UFC 119 suffered an eye injury late in his training camp and may have to pull out of his fight against Frank Mir. Mirko Filipovic may have suffered a serious eye injury in his last training session before flying to Indianapolis. Sources close to the team claim the injury is of a serious nature and could put his UFC 119 with Frank Mir in jeopardy. Cro Cop has allegedly seen by a series of specialist and it's still unclear whether or not he will travel to the United States for the bout.UFC president Dana White went into damage control on Twitter saying Cro Cop was fine. Then Cro Cop threw more gas on the fire during this quick interview before he boarded a plane for Indianapolis. "What can I say? I'm leaving for Indianapolis, this is my 70th fight. That's a lot. I had bad luck in preparations," said Cro Cop. "At the last training, in the last minute, I got a pretty bad eye injury. But I think it will be alright. I have to suck it up. I didn't want to cancel the fight under any circumstances. I took this fight to do a favor to UFC. I wouldn't do that fight for anybody else than UFC."Cro Cop says he refuses to back out. "I am ready to take the risk but I can say you this, all the money in the world is not worth getting my eye injured but at this point there is no chance in hell to back up. Frank Mir is gonna be my toughest fight in my UFC career. It won't be easy." Beyond the eye injury, it doesn't sound like Cro Cop is coming into the fight in tip top shape. "It would be easier for me if I had time to do a full preparation cycle but at the end of the day that's my problem. I accepted the fight under these conditions," said Cro Cop. "I was on vacation when they called me and I just couldn't say no to them. Not because of the money but because of respect to the guys at UFC. They provided me with everything and I secured my life existence fighting for them. To be completely honest, the money was pretty decent and I can assure you that no one would decline that offer."Cro Cop further confirms the lack of a real training camp when he talked about his conditioning. "I will try to do my best, more as a routine fight, and if the fight goes to the third round it will be a handicap for me. But you know, that's life and nothing is ideal." Good for Cro Cop. He stepped up on short notice. He's been a tough dude during his stint with UFC. He took a beating at the hands of Junior Dos Santos and withstood the early pummeling by Pat Barry before emerging with a win. Will he stick it out with an eye injury against Mir? "Again I have to be honest, when you have 70 fights under your belt your priorities change. There is a fear of injuries but I assure I will give my best. I will most certainly go for a win but I think I did a lot just by accepting this fight. That's my opinion."

McKee survives 'win or retire' match, smashes Azevedo

Maybe more fighters need to listen to critical broadcasters and fans before their fights. Antonio McKee was hearing a rash of criticism before his contest tonight at MFC 26 in Canada. The veteran fighter hasn't lost since 2003 but got smashed by HDNet analyst Guy Metzger for being boring. Hell, he's a champion with the promotion and even it didn't have enough confidence in his fighting style to make his fight the main event. With a flair reminiscent of pro wrestling's "Loser Leaves Town" match, McKee fired back by guaranteeing a win and an exciting finish. If he didn't deliver, he said he'd retire. An inspired McKee made good on the promise. He unloaded two vicious elbows, opened up a nasty cut on Luciano Azevedo's brow to force a stoppage and get the win. Not only did he avoid retiring, he may have gotten himself a much sought after fight with a bigger promotion. "I said if I don’t get this guy in first or second round, I'm retiring," McKee said after the win. "I gotta give Guy Metzger credit, he brought this out of me."The victory moved him to 25-3-2 and it secured his first finish in a fight since 2005. Including a draw, he's now won 13 straight fights. Why is he relegated to fighting for promotions like MFC? Fans and MMA bloggers labeled him "Mr. Decision" and said his style is boring. McKee is a huge trash talker but he rarely backed it up in the cage with vicious finishes. He got one tonight. McKee, a wrestler by nature, scored a takedown just 55 seconds into the fight. Once it hit the deck, McKee looked to control Azevedo's arms so he could land a big strike. Did he ever! McKee unloaded two huge elbows near Azevedo's forehead that busted him wide open. The Brazilian freaked out and flipped over. The cut was like a faucet spurting blood from his head. The fight was over. Well, it should've been. Azevedo essentially gave up but was given the benefit of having the ringside doctor check his wound. It didn't matter. He didn't want to go on and McKee was given the win at 3:11 of the first round.  "I guess it's true, you can teach an old dog new tricks," said the 40-year old McKee. "I'm working on my strikes. My ground is getting ridiculous. I'm happy to be here and kick his young ass."McKee has dreamed of a shot in the UFC. Part of his recent explosion included claims that he's not being given his due because he's African-American. McKee said his ground and pound style is no different than white fighters in the UFC like Georges St. Pierre, Randy Couture and Matt Hughes.  "I'm just so strong down there," said McKee. "I'm just waiting for the UFC to release B.J. Penn or Sean Sherk and beat their ass up too."McKee probably deserves at least one shot at the big show. Even if his style has been less than exciting, a seven-year win streak is nothing to sneeze at. Maybe all his talk has caught the attention of the MMA giant and he'll get a chance as a fill-in before the end of 2010.

Warren stages huge comeback to win Bellator featherweight title

Just when you thought Anderson Silva had a lock on the MMA comeback of the year for his win over Chael Sonnen, Joe Warren won the Bellator featherweight championship with an unbelievable comeback.  Returning Bellator champ Joe Soto dominated Warren in the first round, landing punch after punch. After all the shots that Warren took, there was no good reason for Warren to be standing. Soto taunted his Warren, moving his hands away from his face. Warren, a former world champion wrestler, couldn't get Soto to the ground. Warren tried for a spinning back kick, but after he slipped, Soto shook his finger at Warren. The tide changed in the second round, with Warren knocking Soto down with a big righ, following up with unanswered ground and pound, and then when they returned to their feet, Warren finished the fight off with a huge knee. The fight was stopped at 0:38 of the second round. The fight changed so quickly that Soto asked his corner, "What happened?"  "It was all about refocusing. You can't stop me. I'm the baddest man on the planet," Warren said.Bantamweight tournament semifinalists set Ed West moved onto the semifinals of Bellator's bantamweight tournament with a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous decision over Bryan Goldsby. West kept the fight moving, attacking Goldsby's legs early in the fight. West was able to maneuver Goldsby into several submissions throughout the fight, but couldn't finish on any of them. Zach Makovsky won a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges cards, over Nick Mamalis. Makovsky outgrappled Mamalis, controlling him throughout the bout. "I expected an all-around war. After I won the first round, I realized how I could control the fight from on top," Makovsky said after the fight.Ulysses Gomez claimed the final bantamweight tournament spot with a split decision over Travis Reddinger. Gomez survived a late arm bar attempt from Reddinger to win the fight.  Jose Vega, West, Mavovsky and Gomez are the bantamweight semifinalists.

With Okami on tap, Belfort staying the course

Chael Sonnen almost did what most thought was impossible. At UFC 117, Sonnen came within a minute of pulling off the upset over UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. For that, he now gets an immediate rematch. But that also means Vitor Belfort's chance at Silva gets pushed back even further. It's par for the course for the snakebitten former UFC light heavyweight champ who was scheduled to face Silva several times at the start of 2009. First it was Silva that got injured (UFC 108 and 109), then Belfort suffered a shoulder injury (UFC 112) and now Sonnen has moved in front of him again. But the Brazilian, who is one of the more spiritual guys you'll find in MMA, knows his chance will come eventually."I've learned one thing in life. Everybody has a course. Everybody has a path," Belfort told Adam Hill from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I
know where I want to go, and I know I'm going to get there. I know what I have to do to get there. The obstacles
in the way, I don't choose. God knows, my job is to get through them."Belfort will get Yushin Okami next at UFC 122 in Germany. It's a huge fight for Okami, whose best UFC wins are over Mike Swick, Alan Belcher and Mark Munoz. If Belfort loses he tumbles way down the middleweight ladder. Even with a win, the earliest Belfort could probably face the winner of Silva-Sonnen (tenatively scheduled for Jan. or Feb. of 2011) would be May or June of 2011.  Belfort is going to mix things up while he trains around Las Vegas. Shawn Tompkins at TapouT Training Center is his head coach. He'll also be working at Xtreme Couture with boxing coach Gil Martinez and he'll drill jiu-jitsu with Robert Drysdale.Speaking of boxing, Belfort threw out a challenge for James Toney saying he'd like to face the boxer in the Octagon under boxing rules. Toney, desperate to cash another big check from the UFC, already accepted the challenge. That said, the chances of this happening are slim and none. Dana White doesn't seem too keen on working with Toney again and there's no way the promotion would officially go the freakshow route by holding special rules match.

Matt Mitrione: I'm That Guy People Don't Wanna Get Punched By

Filed under: UFCAll eyes were on Matt Mitrione.

The former NFL and all-Big Ten Conference lineman at Purdue had already been labeled a rat by his "Ultimate Fighter" housemates for spilling his team's planned matchups to the opposition. He had been called out by his coach, Rashad Evans, for being merely sore and not injured. And then there were the voices in his head (which he has said after the fact was just an act to alleviate boredom).

Against Scott Junk in a preliminary fight on TUF 10, Mitrione threw kicks and punches with wild abandon. Near the end of the first round, it was clear he had already used up most of his energy. He won a majority decision in a fight that was a mashup of ugly and fun.

A year later, Mitrione is 2-0 in the UFC with a knockout win over Marcus Jones on the TUF 10 live finale last December and a TKO of Kimbo Slice at UFC 113 in May. But it was the fight with Junk that helped make a different voice go off in his head. It was a voice that told him to slow up a little, and Mitrione said that's the most important thing he's learned since leaving the TUF house.

The judges scored the fight 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 for Miller, and although the fight was a little closer than those scores would suggest, it was still a very good showing for Miller, who is now 18-2, with his only two losses coming by decision to the two best lightweights in the world, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Georges St. Pierre is not impressed with your TPS reports

In hyping up season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Georges St. Pierre stopped by the Asylum offices in New York City, and unsurprisingly, he's not impressed by their performance. He asked, "Will people ever let me forget this?" No, Georges. Your "trash talk" of Matt Hughes, which sounded like something a boss would say after you fell short of your quarterly sales goals, is too good for us ever to forget.

After losing at Shark Fights 13, dejected Jardine even further from a UFC return

No one said it's easy to get to the UFC. Keith Jardine realized his dream back in 2006 when made the cast of Season 2 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and over the course of 13 fights he became a fan and promotional favorite. But the "Dean of Mean" ran into some hard luck and was on the wrong side of too many close decisions. For that, he got his pink slip. In an effort to get back to the big show, Jardine jumped at the chance to fight Trevor Prangley, another former UFC veteran. Unfortunately tonight at Shark Fights 13, he didn't have enough to beat Prangley either. The South African got off to a quick start and held on down the stretch to get a split decision win, 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28, over Jardine in the main event in Amarillo, Tx. That makes it five straight losses and 6-of-8 for Jardine. "It’s the biggest win of my career," said Prangley. Prangley (23-6) is a true middleweight and weighed in well under the light heavyweight limit at 202 3/4 pounds. But power wasn't an issue. He sent a message early in the fight by muscling Jardine in the clinch and landing a big knee right on his chin. Jardine's knees buckled and the shot opened up a nice gash over his left eye. Bleeding badly, Jardine was on his back underneath a nasty ground and pound fighter just two minutes into the fight. It stayed down on the mat for another two-plus minutes with Prangley landing some good elbows. The action stayed on the feet in the second but it was Prangley who once again landed the best shot when he put Jardine on his butt with an uppercut. Jardine wouldn't quit."Moving up a weight class, and to fight a guy of his caliber (was great). He sat there and ate everything I had to give him," said Prangley. "There were a couple of times when he buckled a little bit. I said 'yes it‘s over', but man he just kept coming back. I just couldn’t kill the guy."Jardine (15-9) really turned it on in the final minutes as Prangley tired badly. The South African took a ton of wicked shots but wouldn't go down. It was just enough to get the split decision. "I know he’s got great cardio working at altitude. I knew I had to win the first two and hopefully I'd have enough to finish and win the third," said Prangley. "Everyone kept asking what’s your gameplan. I kept saying 'I have no idea what to do against this guy' but I did pull off a victory." The lack of a gameplan might be Jardine's biggest problem right now. He's a well-rounded fighter but too often he fights into his opponent's style or doesn't push the pace enough. Prangley's had conditioning issues in the past. If that weakness had been seized upon by Jardine, we might be looking at a return to UFC relatively soon. Now he needs to go back to the drawing board.

Koscheck, Part II: Trash talk, family and Fitch

Josh Koscheck will make his debut as a coach on season twelve of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Wednesday evening, airing after Ultimate Fight Night 22 on Spike. Read part I of Cagewriter's interview with Koscheck here.Josh Koscheck is known as one of the bigger trash talkers in MMA. He has a brash side, but immediately softens when you bring up his friends and family. Koscheck and Jon Fitch, teammates at American Kickboxing Academy, are two of the UFC's best welterweights. However, they refuse to face off because their friendship means more than the belt.Koscheck says that if he wins the title from Georges St. Pierre on Dec. 11, and he is forced to face Fitch, he'll vacate the title."When I win the title, I'd vacate it and let Fitch win it. They can't make us fight. I would vacate the title and say, Fitch, you fight. You win the title."Though he does not have any children of his own, Koscheck is close with his four nieces and nephews, and says that a family of his own is the one thing missing."I'm happy with my success. 99.9 percent of my life is complete. I just need that one percent. That one little thing, and that's a family." "It's everything. One of the things I've learned over the last two years is that money isn't important and winning the title isn't as important as family. Money, winning the title, that's icing on the cake. What I want is a family and kids." 'You're so slow. That's all you have Paul?' But that soft side doesn't show up in the Octagon, where he has developed a reputation as a trash talker. He even admits that he talks throughout his fights, including his bout with Paul Daley. Koscheck won the unanimous decision, but Daley sucker punched Koscheck after the fight had ended. "He was talking [profane]. He said, 'Let me up, you [profane.] All you want to do is hold me down.' I said, 'This isn't [profane] kickboxing, this is MMA.' He started eye-gouging me. I could feel his finger in the back of my head. I couldn't see out of that eye for a month. We were talking [profane] the whole fight. The first round, he threw a jab, and I said, 'Oh my God. You're so slow. That's all you have Paul?'"He does admit that the mid-fight talk doesn't always pay off."When I fought Georges, when Georges got the last takedown, I was talking the entire time. I said, 'You got lucky today, Georges,' and he cracked me with a big elbow." After the fight, Koscheck taunted the crowd in Montreal, saying that his Pittsburgh Penguins would beat the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup playoffs. (The Canadiens went on to win the series, but were knocked out by another Pennsylvania team, the Flyers.) Even after the crowd booed, spat and threw things at Koscheck, he said he regrets nothing."Why would I regret anything I say? I don't live my life with regrets. I try to do what I feel is right at the time. If it's the wrong thing to say, it's the wrong thing to say. I can't change the past." But he wasn't afraid that night, and he's not concerned about going to Montreal again to fight GSP."The UFC already has plans to hide me this time around, and I'll have security with me 24x7. Dana White gets death threats every day. I get death threats every day. I see the messages, but, it's life. What am I going to be? A [profane] and hide forever? If some one wants me, they're going to come get me."He has a message for anyone who wants to go after him: Come and get me."If they want to fight me, come to the gym. We'll sign a waiver and throw down. I'll fight everyone who wants to."The invitation is open.

Three Stars from last week: Alexander, McKee and Larkin

Though there wasn't a Strikeforce or UFC event, last week was full of MMA. Here are the fighters who stood out from Bellator, Shine Fights, Shark Fights and Maximum Fighting Championships.  No. 1 star -- Houston Alexander: The 38-year-old survived an early onslaught to TKO Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at Shark Fights 13. Now, he has two wins in a row. It may not be enough to get the UFC calling, but it's a good start. No. 2 star -- Antonio McKee: The veteran fighter, who is known to win decisions, said that he would retire if Friday night's bout at MFC went to decision. He TKOed Luciano Azevedo, and then called out B.J. Penn and Sean Sherk.  No. 3 star -- Eric Larkin: In just his third fight, Larkin ran over Marcus Andrusia like a truck at Bellator. With a serious wrestling pedigree -- he was a four-time All American wrestler at Arizona State -- he is nothing but potential.

Whitehead fighting some serious allegations in Las Vegas

Mixed martial artists get pretty good attention from the local Las Vegas media but back in April, Mike Whitehead made the local news for all the wrong reasons. He was accused of sexual assault. The female accuser and a friend hit Whitehead's home for barbecue. The women asked to stay at Whitehead's home feeling like they had too much to drink. That's when the alleged trouble began:  The report said Whitehead told the women that they could sleep in his
bed. One of the women said she awoke to find her pants down and Whitehead having
sex with her in the bed. Although she repeatedly demanded that he stop, he
didn't for about three minutes, according to the police report. After the alleged incident, Whitehead sat in a chair in the bedroom, police
said. The second woman, who had been next to the woman on the bed, said she
witnessed the alleged assault, according to the police report. The second woman
alleged that Whitehead groped her during the incident, the report said.
Whitehead turned himself in to Las Vegas authorities where he was charged with sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and open and
gross lewdness. According to the Las Vegas Sun, Whitehead's day in court, a preliminary hearing, will take place on Sept. 28.The timing couldn't be worse for Whitehead, who's developed a good reputation as a Las Vegas-based trainer and training partner for some high level MMA fighters. The 29-year-old is still fighting as well. He's won 16-of-18 fights. His only two losses during the run came against former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Muhammed Lawal and Babalu Sobral. Since the arrest and allegations, Whitehead fought again coming away with a win over another former UFC fighter Chase Gormley on July 10. Whitehead was a cast member on Season 2 of the UFC's "The Ultimate Fighter" but lost his only fight with the promotion against Keith Jardine at UFC 57.

Huerta soaks in more of the brawl spotlight on TMZ

In an odd way, Roger Huerta is proving you don't need the UFC marketing machine to promote yourself to casual and non-MMA fans. The former UFC prospect is only 1-1 since leaving the promotion but has gotten plenty of national attention. The reason? It wasn't exactly part of some grand plan. At 2:15 a.m., Huerta happened to stumble upon what looked like a man hitting a woman outside an Austin bar in Texas. Huerta stepped in to beat the snot out of the unsuspecting dude, who was reported to have been a former University of Texas linebacker. According to TMZ's Harvey Levin, the Huerta fight video was one of the biggest stories of that week on the site. Considering that TMZ is normally dealing with the likes of Mel Gibson, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Justin Bieber, for anything concerning an MMA fighter to compete with that mix is pretty impressive. Huerta was invited to appear on TMZ's afternoon webcast and talked about the incident. "I approached the man and said, "You don't do that. You don't hit a woman," said Huerta. "The video doesn't show what happened next, but he said, '[Expletive] you. I'll knock
any [expletive] out I want.' The tape also doesn't show that he swung at me two or
three times right after that." "All you see is me bouncing up and down. He has already swung at me at that
point. Then the guy takes off running. I chased him down and you saw what else
happened ... I can't talk about what exactly happened because it's a legal
matter. If the same thing occurred, I would do it all over again. I have no
regrets."
It's interesting to note that Huerta had to often restrain himself from going into too much detail. There are still plenty of legal hoops to jump through. Huerta says he do it again but you wonder if he'd like to erase the end of the brawl where he apparently got pretty vicious? The appearance actually makes you wonder who's handling his case. It's a little surprising that a lawyer would allow him to speak at all on this sort of platform.  These TMZ videos are unique. There's no real setup. Check out the beginning. It looks like Levin is ready to ask Huerta to beat up a faulty chair.  Quotes via Fightlinker

Konrad dominates Grabowski in Bellator heavyweight tournament

Cole Konrad won a mostly boring, but dominant, decision over Damian Grabowski, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, in Bellator's heavyweight semifinals on Thursday in Milwaukee.Konrad started with an immediate takedown, then followed up with knees in Grabowski's side. His control from the top, with scattered knees and punches, continued for the rest of the round. Grabowski barely did anything throughout the round. He took a bit longer to get the takedown in the second round, actually throwing a punch and controlling Grabowski in the clinch before easily taking him to the ground. The referee tired of the grapplefest halfway through the second and stood the two fighters up. It didn't take long for Konrad to take the fight right back down to the ground, and even went for a submission, grabbing Grabowski's arm in a kimura attempt. It didn't work out, but it's a big step for the NCAA champion wrestler. You're never going to guess what Konrad did to start the third and final round. Did you guess take Grabowski down? Then you were right! But this time, Grabowski was able to get out from under Konrad. Grabowski even tried for a takedown and guillotine. Neither were successful, and Konrad scored another takedown, controlling the bout until the final bell.Konrad will now face Neil Grove in the finals of Bellator's inaugural heavyweight tournament. Grove is a dangerous striker and will provide interesting match-up for Konrad's wrestling.

by Michael David SmithFormer UFC stars Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Houston Alexander gave the fans in Texas a great fight Saturday night at Shark Fights 13, with Sokoudjou badly hurting Alexander in the first round, only to have Alexander come back and win by technical knockout in the second.

At the start of the fight it appeared that Sokoudjou would finish Alexander easily, as Sokoudjou knocked Alexander around and had him badly hurt on the ground. But late in the first round Alexander surprisingly turned the tables on Sokoudjou, got on top of him on the ground, and actually appeared to be the fresher of the two fighters by the end of the first. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

CSAC: Information on Sonnen's Test Results Coming Monday Afternoon

Filed under: UFC, NewsThe California state athletic commission expects to officially release information pertaining to Chael Sonnen's UFC 117 drug test results later today, a CSAC athletic inspector has informed MMA Fighting.

Over the weekend, Sherdog reported that Sonnen had failed his post-fight test, while the LA Times reported that he'd failed his pre-fight screening. The LA Times story more specifically reported that Sonnen had tested positive for a steroid. Both reports cited CSAC executive officer George Dodd as the source. To date, however, the CSAC has not yet officially disclosed exactly what was in Sonnen's system.

NY assemblyman Bob Reilly: Violence is not good for society

Hey, do you want to listen to someone ignorant but powerful speak about MMA? Here you go! New York assemblyman Bob Reilly is a guest on HDNet's Inside MMA on Friday evening, and he says that the violence in the cage is not good for society. He tries to address violence in other sports, like football and boxing, but is unsuccessful at explaining how the violence on the football field is different than the violence in the cage. We've discussed Assemblyman Reilly and his lack of understanding of MMA several times before, so there is no need to rehash why he is wrong. I give Reilly credit for meeting his opponents on their field, but it's a shame that he didn't walk in with an open mind.Watch the full report on Inside MMA on HDNet at 9 p.m. ET.

Watch Joe Warren KO Joe Soto for Bellator featherweight title

As we wrote about last night, Joe Warren won the Bellator featherweight championship with a shocking comeback. Watch as Bellator commentator starts to say that he scored the first round 10-8 for Soto, then is interrupted by Warren's quick right to knock down Soto. With that, Warren won the Bellator featherweight title, proclaiming himself the "baddest man on the planet." In the space of a year and a half, he's moved from being a world champion wrestler to a champion fighter.

SWELL in NYC (July 1st - Aug 6th)

Here's an interesting looking exhibition of "art inspired by surf and beach culture", opening July 1st at 3 locations in New York (gallery addresses on image below), involving COTW artists Ned Evans, Wolfgang Bloch, Jim Evans and Sandow Birk…Curated by Tim Nye and Jacqueline Miro. This survey of art inspired by surf and beach culture will open to the public on July 1st at the three locations in Chelsea and will include work by most members of the group of Venice Beach artists known as Light and Space and Finish Fetish. The show historically contextualizes beach culture and its poetic and freeing nature on the Beat Generation, Assemblage, Light and Space, Finish Fetish, and early Pop Art. From this group of California artists, works by Wallace Berman, George Herms, Bruce Conner, Llyn Foulkes, Ed Kienholz, Billy Al Bengston, Tony Berlant, Ed Ruscha, Laddie John Dill, Dewain Valentine, Peter Alexander, John McCracken, Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, and Helen Pashgian will be on view. One of the main axes of the show is the obvious yet sensual relationship between Shapers and the Finish Fetish movement of the 60's. As the show focuses on two cities, L.A. and New York, it attempts to place the Ocean and its proximity to both cities as an antidote to a cacophony of quantities, speed and competing images. It also addresses how later generations of artists have looked back at assemblage, ephemera and graffiti as a way to either incorporate or reject the piercing presence of branding, advertisement, and information technology.SWELL is a state of mind, but it is also our way of understanding distant forces, the beyond.www.nyehaus.com

Report: Chael Sonnen Failed UFC 117 Drug Test

Filed under: UFCIn a blockbuster development that will have far-reaching ramifications for both the way we view one of the biggest fights of 2010 and the potential for a rematch of that fight in 2011, Chael Sonnen has reportedly been informed that he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs after his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117.

Sonnen will presumably be suspended, and a second middleweight title fight between Sonnen and Silva -- which undoubtedly would have been among the biggest fights for the UFC next year -- may need to be scrapped.

"[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday," California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd told Sherdog.com.

Twenty large may get Dana White to follow you on Twitter!

UFC president Dana White is part of TwitChange. The Twitter charity effort began taking bids on Wednesday. The highest bidder on dozens of celebrity Twitter accounts will be rewarded by having their celeb follow them for 90 days. All the proceeds go to the efforts to build a home and school for Special Needs kids in Haiti. All proceeds from the TwitChange celebrity auction will provide aHomeInHaiti.org the means to ?nish rebuilding the Miriam Center. The Miriam Center houses, educates and loves on Haitian children with cerebral palsy, severe autism, and other major life challenges and is one of the only facilities of its kind in Haiti. The current facility houses children in the earthquake?s aftermath and is extremely overcrowed. These kids need and deserve a permanent home.@danawhite's megapack is currently $11,100 (as of Thursday night, 10 p.m. PT).The Cagewriter budget is huge so we're looking to nab at least one celebrity. We may need to beat out Anquan Boldin for Antonio Cromartie. And there's no truth to the rumor that the money is simply going to the effort to build a home for all of @a_cromartie31's kids. That one's for @chaddukes. Come on Jets' fans, Cromartie is just $51 right now.All kidding aside, there's hundreds of celebrities up for bids. Michael Strahan might be nice. We're counting on Kelly Naqi and Dr. Ian Smith staying out of the bidding for @MichaelStrahan.   What "Jersey Shore" fan wouldn't want to win the scorned Twitter account of @MTVSammi? If only the megapack included a smoosh with Sammi Sweetheart. Gayle King is up there. You say, who? Good for you. No MMA blog reader should be aware of @kinggayle unless you actually write the blog. Well-roundedness is needed in blogging and MMA. It is for charity so no jokes about Pete Carroll. The least Reggie Bush could do is bid on @petecarroll or vice versa.Bidding on eBay closes in just over a week.

Lesnar needs to change up his camp for Velasquez

Brock Lesnar may appear to be all brute force, but there's a lot more science to what he's been doing in the cage. He's not quite on the game-planning level of Randy Couture, but Lesnar has come up with and executed a few good ones early in his career. Erik Paulson, who's worked with Lesnar heavily over the years, predicted the arm-triangle choke that got him the win over Shane Carwin at UFC 116. But he thinks Cain Velasquez is going to be a different animal and Lesnar will need his camp to implement something new for the Oct. 23 fight in Anaheim. "He's gonna try to bring in quality guys and formulate a game plan," Paulson told FightHubTV.com (6:00  mark). "I already know a game plan that would work for him, [but] it's just a word of advice. Whether or not he follows through with that, it's up to him."Lesnar works out of his gym in Minnesota and his head coach is former NCAA wrestling champ Marty Morgan. Before the Carwin fight, he had guys like Chris Tuchscherer, Jon Madsen, Cole Konrad in the camp along with a quick visit from Randy Couture. Those guys are all wrestlers by nature. Paulson suggests that the cardio first plan before the Carwin fight needs to be altered.  "What Brock needs more than anything is good sparring partners who can kickbox and grapple. So he's got to get some guys in his camp that can throw down with good striking, good takedowns and good takedown defense," said Paulson. "I'm sure the goal for the camp will be to bring in some good strikers."Paulson may not sound too bullish on his guy, but he does point out that Velasquez also has a big challenge in front of him.   "There's a big size difference with Brock," Paulson said of the 240-pound Velasquez. "He's a good wrestler so he can stop stuff, get out of stuff, [but] I don't know if he's used to going with something who's as big and powerful as Brock. Finding someone that's actually equally as aggressive and powerful as Brock [will be tough]." The 265-pound Lesnar defends his UFC heavyweight title against Velasquez at UFC 121.

Cole Miller Submits Ross Pearson in Great UFC Fight Night 22 Battle

by Michael David SmithFormer Ultimate Fighter winner Ross Pearson fought a good first round against Cole Miller Wednesday night at UFC Fight Night 22, but a good first round wasn't enough.

Miller turned the fight around with a sensational comeback in the second, winning a great fight to start off the night's televised card, and he said afterward that he was proud to have finished his fight.

"I'm just happy I came out here and did what I said I was going to do," Miller said. "I see all these wrestlers, point fighting strikers and lay and pray jiu jitsu guys all doing the same thing. Nobody tries to finish, pass guard, mount, nothing, just control the clock. This ain't football. People got to come in here and fight." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
